that's pretty close to the edge of your disk...... adjust the recording to no more than 4400MB.

this shows that your disk is in question here! I wouldn't burn at 16x unless it's a Taiyo Yuden disk...... and you are using a Sony Disk.... Sony outsouces their disks to different manufactures and I would use Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden (my choice of disks) better than Sony media.

Power calibration error

usually a POWER CALIBRATION ERROR refers to not liking the media used! and the quote before this proves it! change to better media as stated above! You should have better luck then.

Ihoe, before responding to your post. I had already attempted several solutions listed elsewhere in other reputable forums. Mainly one of them is actually dismantling the dvd-writer and cleaning the lens - which i found it to be perfectly sanitized. After re-assembling it, i'd tried reading movie dvd-roms but my attempt seemed futile. The dvd-writer would not read the dvd-rom, not even changing it's original hardware address block to the information on the disc. Strangely though, my writer is still able to read from music cd-roms and dvd-roms previously burnt using the sony dru-720a writer. Finally, what does having a ASPI driver provides and may i know besides verbatim and taiyo yuden which are the commerical brands of dvd/cd-roms which are much more compatible for smooth writing on?

here is another response about POWER CALIBRATION ERRORS:
<9>I have a Power calibration error?
Options you can try with "power calibration errors"
o Try another brand of DVD-/+R or DVD-/+RW media. This is the most common cause of OPC errors.
o "Slow down your burning speed".
o Update the firmware of your recorder. Check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
o Check your power connectors, loose connections do occur. Don't share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the errors occurs with an external recorder, Check the USB cable and connections.
o Try different configurations, such as taking the DVD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
o Clean or have your DVD burner serviced. There are cleaning kits available. Sometimes just a gentle appplication of canned air can remove dust blocking the laser.
o Replace the DVD burner.
lets hope we don't need to do the last one :-)

this advice found here:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/183136

Using good media is very important.... stops many errors from happening to begin with..... and if you are using good media and still having a problem...... you can count out your media as being the problem! here is a media guide for you:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
this guide is not without it's faults.... TDK should not be in First Class ....it's second class at best! I strictly use Taiyo Yuden, DVD+R, 8x white inkjet hub printables or the Silver printables. You can find them at Supermediastore.com, Rima.com, Meritline.com and other online stores. If I have to I will use Verbatim (made in Taiwan/Singapore) 8x +Rs. these are more readily found in stores, although the 16x are more prominent. I don't like the 16x media because my drives love the 8x media better.

and you can read about ASPI layer here:
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/aspisetup.cfm

good luck!

After heeding all your guides, nothing seems to bypass the 'power calibration error' issue. Firstly, i have upgraded nero 7 to nero 8, secondly, tried to lower the burning speed to 6x. Thirdly, cleaned the lens of the writer. Fourthly, updated the firmware revision to the latest. In addition, i have experimented with burning of dvd+/-rw which turned out successful. But still unable to write on my SONYD21 discs. Please enlighten me on what' the next best logical step thank you.

Besides changing to a new dvd-writer, are there other last ditch attempt to revive my dvd-writer? If not could both of you guys recommend me a reliable yet renowned dvd-writer manufacturer which i would avoid seeing the 'power calibration error' issue thank you

yes, rotary i could write to my dvd+rw. But i could still not write to the SONYD21 media that i have. I have also tried changing configurations to PATA secondary master drive, yet still experience the same setback of 'power calibration error'. I am really at my wits end trying to solve this nuisance of mine. Please kindly advise on the situation, greatly appreciate all your time and effort.
