Pc power up problem

Long time since i last posted,lol, but......
My current problem is that my computer suddenly wont turn on. I decided to open it up, and to see if eveything was fine. Powered it on, while the case was on... the fan moved for a second, and the mini light at the front of the case came on, but this then stopped (after a sec) and nothing else happened.]
As a precautionary, to see if any problems were up with any of the 2 RAM modules, i tried the computer with 1 each. But the problem remained entirely the same as above.
I fear this may be a PSU problem, but im not a 100% sure! Just needing some refined guidance on this problem thanks.

NEVER spend that little on a Power supply, or you'll have far worse problems than your PC not turning on, cheap PSUs damage parts, and can even catch fire. I recommend that you AT LEAST go with this unit:

The problem may well be your PSU, but given your case it could also be an overheat trigger, so you may want to check your CPU heatsink and replace as ecessary (note, you will need to clean and replace the thermal paste on the CPU and remove the existing paste from the heatsink if you remove it unless you have already applied your own)

Thanks sam, ill be getting a new psu today. I just really hope the problem isnt the motherboard
just as extra info, my current psu WAS running on a 315W psu.
It came as standard with the packard bell pc that i bought.
As for the thermal paste, i haven't ever changed that yet in the 2-3 years of my pc
In case this helps: my current specs:
2.93ghz processor socket 775
315W psu
2x512mb ram - ddr pc3200
one lightscribe dvd writer
its not too good, but i do hope to upgrade in the near future

Packard Bell PSUs can sometimes be a bit crap if I'm honest. I'm sticking with the PSU at the moment based on my previous experience with those units.

I much prefer Aria to MicroDirect, whilst Aria's returns process can be a pain in the proverbial, Microdirect will just laugh at you if you so much as mention the word return, their customer service is not at all good.

Currently, ill try give as much detail as possible
Socket 775 pentium 4, 2.93GHz processor, stock fan
Ram: 2x512mb DDR pc3200
Hard drive: master drive is sata (160gb), Secondary drive is IDE(80gb)
Optical Drive: LiteON IDE drive
Graphics card: not sure if just pci or pci-e, but its a ATI radeon X300, only VGA output
Video tuner card with single input
Thats all i can think about
But, if i got a mobo id want it to be a DDR2, and dual core supportable. I dont mind buying new ddr2 ram.
Yeh arias kewl, whats good is that aria and microdirect and aria are both in close physical proximity to me
so i dont mind either way

Hey, ive bought the parts and ive never ever done anything like change a motherbaord, but im really proud of myself! I did it sucessfully and ive got everything reconnected except the processor
i didnt want to take a risk, so i ask...when ive placed the CPU in the socket, should i clear the thermal paste on it from before and also the heat sink, and put some more and then re-connect or should i just reconnect with the same thermal paste

ps...on that mobo is the inbuilt graphics better than the one on my x300?

When moving a processor, if you're using the heatsink that came with it, you will need to remove the thermal paste on the heatsink and the CPU and apply new stuff (to the CPU only).
As for the graphics, theyre probably very similar.

okay, well thats the only thing preventing me right now from booting up and testing my pc, but it looks quite nice now lol :-)
as for the graphics, guess ill have to try them out and see :-)
but im not much of a gamer to be honest, i use my laptop more for that!

lol
but the problem still hasnt sorted out, and now when i connect my keyboard the keyboard lights flash, and when i press the on button it doesnt even turn and no lights come on :-(
ive replaced the mobo and psu
any suggestions what could be wrong, i think there may be a short cicruit some where but im not sure where...
any extra help?

everything fitted in really well, so id presume so
i plugged in the 24pin wire and ATX 12V wire in
id presume the power wires were correct since the keyboard lights came on when i switched the psu supply button on

I had the same problem with the exact same symptoms you described and I was able to solve it by removing an external USB hub I had connected wich apparently stopped functioning properly and was causing boot up problems...in short check your USB devices.

Lol no there's more to it than that!
Your case switch and power LED/Hard disk Led are connected to the motherboard at the bottom... I take it you haven't connected them...

erm.. ive not got any usb deviced plugged in
my mobo usbs should be perfect since i just bought a new mobo
also ive tried this with nothing but the cpu, the ram, and the psu
to no avail

the ram difference is soo notable on my computer!
maybe its the the mobo and the psu too
but everythings quicker
gotta redo the driver stuff lol :-)
