I've been at it for 6 years now. I prefer the horror, although I do have all the Star Trek, Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis, Buffy, Angel, Charmed. I could go on. My daughter likes The Cosbys, Roseanne, Full House, Hannah Montana (the usual stuff), my sons prefer action and comedy. So between the four of us, I've racked up a bit. Probably close to 50 a month now since we have most of what's out there.
But if anyone is looking for some hard cases for their dvds, here's where I got mine: http://www.meritline.com/cd-wallet-stora...dvds-above.html
I chose the wooden with crocodile-style cover 500 CD/DVD Case flat top. You can't beat the free shipping.

I'm using the same exact setup as you. But 1 case only holds a max of 1000, so when you are on the next case the numbering starts over from 1, how do you distiguish 1 set from another. It would be nice if they were continuously number up to 2000...

Actually, when I first started, they were in dvd cases on bookshelves. I just used a spreadsheet program to keep them in alphabetical order. I still use the program to keep my list in order. The entries are now color coordinated to go to what case they are in. since my children probably have about 1000 dvds in their rooms, they still use bookcases and their entries are black. I started to go for the case that holds 1000, but I sort of like that crocodile look. Plus, I can lift them easily.

Try putting the DVD in large CD cases (200 Count) and just label the disk it's name. Save a little money on cases and printing all the covers for the movies

I would need 35 of those. Right now, I have 15 that holds 500, getting ready to order number 16. The house I'm having built has a large walk in closet, so there's plenty of room to stack the 3 across, 8 high.

just buy a large cd/dvd folder; 200 - 300 discs per folder. using a folder will solve space but it makes organising, a nightmare

After years, the following cases are all I use. Each holds 510, the limit I choose even though they make cases that hold more, due to total weight.

You can catch them on sale from time to time.

I could squeeze 10 more in my cases, but since they are in alphabetical order and there are dividers for each letter and combos of letters such as ch, st, th, etc, I keep them just shy of 475.

That is very easy, I have many. The first case is "A", the second is "B",etc., etc...... I put a sticker over the Meritline symbol on the front of the case whith the appropiate letter. Then when I put the movie in my spreadsheet (which is in alphabetical order) I list it as:

Spiderman A-259
Superman Returns B-417
etc,etc.....

Besides the spreadsheet in alphabetical order of all my movies, I keep three ring binders with 3 to a page of the cover photo, a synopsis and the year, minutes and rating and also the location, i.e. B-56, C-211, etc, etc.... It sounds like a lot, but if I want to browse through for a movie to watch, it makes it very simple. It sounds like a lot of work, but once you make your template in say "Word" or whatever program, it is very easy to use a site like DVD Empire to just copy and paste the info over and over again. really simple. Just keep your printer down to text and images, no need to have them at photo quality, wastes to much ink.

You are my hero. I haven't even broken the hundred mark and I'm already out of space. I can see how the binders would save space, but without the cover art, its just not the same. Unless their printable discs, then I might allow it. :P

Just passing thru; i personally found 500 capacity binders to be unwieldy, i instead use 240 capacity, which are still very heavy but are much more manageable

I think I was misunderstood. Let me clarify. The 510 cases that I use are not a binder, but an actual hard aluminum/plastic case with two handles which I keep on a shelf. All the hanging sleeves are numbered and of soft self-cleaning material. Really the best way I have found. You can see a picture here:

http://www.meritline.com/cd-dvd-510-hold...ets-ehj510.html

The 3 ring notebooks only hold a photo of the DVD cover, not the DVD itself, along with all the info. 3 to a page. Thus only 170 pages of paper in each loose-leaf 3-ring notebook. As mentioned, makes it easy to browse through. This is in addition of my complete DVD list on spreadsheets (small print, 4 rows per page), saved on my computer.

I hope this clarifies things up. Later

I know this will take some time. It may cost you some $$$$.

Buy yourself a 2 or 3 TB backup HDDs.
Set up a small computer system with a decent graphics card in your main TV viewing area with Power DVD or anything to view DVDs on the computer. Use your LDC or Plasma as a computer monitor.

Connect the 2 or 3 TB drives to the computer.

Backup your entire DVD collection on your HDDs.
Then box up all your original DVDs and store them away. I have them stored in my garage right now.

When I want to watch a movie, I just locate the folders on my HDD. I have them set up by what type of DVD on each drive.
The computer HDD contains music and MP3s.

HDD 1 is Movies
HDD 2 is TV Shows
HDD 3 is music DVD

You can set yours up any way your want.

Great idea is a video capture card to record off the tv with.

This cuts down on the storage of DVDs in the house.

What I have done is set this PC on the house network and all this can be viewed on any PC in the house. We have 4 other computers in the house.

That's the sort of thing i do; these days DVD's are used literally as just backups, i have a few xboxes running XBMC that play AVI/DVD/music etc across the network.

I see, but when you have a random sleeve laying around numbered 46, how will you know which 46? without looking up the title of the film? So you'd still have to come up with a way of physically assigning UNIQUE alpha/numbero to each sleeve.

Not true. There are 2 discs to a sleeve, with two numbers assigned to each sleeve. Each disc is labeled with a sharpie with the following:

A-345 (Location)

Spiderman (Movie Title)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just doesn't get any easier.
I suppose if you had the sleeve 245 / 246 out from case A and the sleeve 245 / 246 out from case B , and had all four DVDS out of the sleeve and playing, well then it really would not matter what sleeve they went back in. As I mentioned, all the DVDs are numbered as to the A, B, C, etc.,etc... case.
I would agree With Teflonmike - And severalof the other illustrious members in that for really large collections in minimal space with maximum protection of your Media ( DVD's ) The Hard Dj Type cases would be they way to Go ! Short of a Larger apartment you may want to think about about some racks in the interim - http://www.deepdiscount.com/Media-Storag...58VVviewcat.htm
Wow..Some great ideas for storage here. I personally use the binders. I have several binders that store the cover art and movie as well as binders for dvds only. I am really interested in the hanging storage system. I wonder how difficult it would be to convert a nice dresser or credenza into a hanging cd storage system and where to go about getting the hardware to hold the hanging cd's. I would really prefer storage to look like a piece of furniture. Any ideas??
ahhh. yes, yes, good idea to label the numbers on the disc. That solves it then. I have always just put only the titles on the disc and the the pre-numbered sleeves do the job. Looks like I'll have to add alpha to discs.
Instead of numbering each case 1, 2, etc., letter each case A, B, C, etc. That way when you categorize your movies, you can list a movie as #A86 or #86a, meaning #86 in binder A and so forth.
Good idea but what happens if one of those drives goes bad and you don't have each movie backed up onto a dvd disc, you lose all of those movies and all of the time you put into the work. BTW, has anyone seen a binder that holds 5000 discs?
Well since starting this thread I just recently found the solution to my space problem. Discsox DVD-Pro sleeves! These things save me a ton of space and allow me to keep the original cover art, inlays--everything that came with the DVD minus the case! They are a little pricey but to me it's worth it. Here's a link to discsox main site
