hi, I am trying to re-install xp on my lap top and when it gets to about 34 min in loading devices it freezes. I have removed all external devices. at a loss where to go from here as to replace devices on the lap top without knowing which one is causing the problem if that is whats causing it could be expensive. is there a way to find out where the problem lays?

Did you try to do a clean install, or did you try to install over the top of what was already there?

The clean install (format C:)is the best way to install.

The following applies, if you don't have to get anything off of that hard drive or partition.

Ok, after you put the CD in, and it goes through its paces, and gets to the screen that asks you to install, there is an option for deleting the partition. Delete it.

You then get the option to allocate what you deleted, to a new partition. Do so.

You then get the option to install XP to that partition, you say yes, and it asks you about formatting it. Choose NTFS, fast format, and let it rip.

See if this gets you through the install.

Then is sounds like your hard drive is shot. Try a different one.

BTW, I have to ask. Are the XP discs you have copies?

disable all the onboard devices in the bios except for what you need to load xp. that includes the net card as had 2 towers from a customer whose onboard netcards were fried because a kitten\cat chewed thru the power adapter cable to the wired router. xp would stop installing at the network card till i disabled it in the bios.

yes as ran into that when doing a fresh install of xp. might have been a bad ram socket or oxidation on the gold contacts of the ram or socket because when i moved ram into other slots, xp loaded okay.

hi appear to have solved it I removed the pci card and then installed xp . then I put pci card back in and enabled all the things that I had disabled and so far it seems to have worked so fingers and toes crossed. it seems that the pci card contacts the devices so what ever was causing the problem couldn't comunicate so didn't stop xp from loading
