I have several downloaded movies that I've just converted to video (VOB?), and I tried to burn them to a DVD using NERO 6, when I finished I wasn't able to play them on my DVD player, all I could see was lines going up ...
After a few tries, I got an error message and I was advised to upgrade to NERO 8. I did and I burned yet another DVD, but the result it's the same... The picture is gray and I have lines going up... Can some one help me?
Thank you..

your problem is not the programs you use..... it's the media that you burn to!

there are plenty of reasons why certain media brands won't play in other players:

1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x).
2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual.
3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this:
http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk!
*******5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.)Taiyo Yuden is the only brand I use! Verbatim is also top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan and they are top notch! Using quality media that is most recognized by players/recorders stop MANY problems like the ones you are getting!
6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better!

follow these little tips of the trade and you'll have better success! good luck.

also read this:
http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/Why-DVDRW-is-superior-to-DVD-RW/
why the +R media is better than the -R media

is it just vob you have or ifo and bup inside the VIDEO_TS folder

nero makes the VIDEO_TS folder when useing DVD-VIDEO project. you insert files for burning...

or

are you converting say an avi file to dvd then burning

could do with more info really to help out

but as ihoe says is very much the case aswell

maybe post your nero log file so we can read more things going on here

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

Ok, I did use some obscure DVD disk.. I don't even know the name of them ( It's been so long since I threw the cover away) .. But I have used them to burn from DVD to DVD before and they worked fine..
I can't buy a new brand right (maybe tomorrow), but I'll try one more time with the instructions you just posted, thank you :)

I'm sorry, I don't know how to look that up!

Ok, I just made another DVD, I slowed the speed to 4x and I still have the same problem, I can watch them on my PC, but it just won't work on my regular DVD player...
I still get the gray screen with the picture on the back and lines going up up up..

Here's the log, it said at the end that the DVD was burned successfully, but it always says the same...

I just checked and it's set to DVD-ROM... do I need to change it?

(To check it, I went to image; project; Copy, then to Copy Entire DVD, then options)

thats where you set it to booktype

i was just wondering if it actully did make the dvd itself dvd-rom or not?

as booktyping should make it more compatible to play in stand alone dvd players

maybe dvd info pro or dvd identifier may check dvdr for booktyped

ok, thank you IHoe and Rotary!

I'm off to buy a new DVD brand disks to see if that can solve my problem :)

I'm not really familiar with all these, so I'll try one of the solutions IHoe suggested, a nice Japanese brand, and I'll let you guys know :)

I know it's a long shot, but a disk that plays on the PC, but gives nothing (not even breaking up) on the player might be a PAL disk on an NTSC player.

if you are going to stores then you can find Verbatim readily..... but make sure you read the label and get the ones made in Singapore/Taiwan!

there are plenty of times that a disk that can't be read by a player just shows a blank screen! Malah is converting an avi to DVD. I don't think in the conversion that an avi that is PAL will make a PAL DVD! Sounds too weird to me. Anyway....... this is typically a media problem and not PAL or NTSC problem. At least I never ever seen an avi that is PAL and when you convert it the DVD is also PAL???? does that make sense? hmmmmmmmm I'm getting mixed up! LOL

Nero (and ConvertXtoDVD when set to 'Automatic') will make the output DVD the same as the input AVI - Nero will pop-up a warning immediately before burning (if it hasn't been disabled).
This is an AVI of a BBC video - but the same applies to D/L VOB's.- and AFAIK Nero encodes everything anyway.
Nero is set to produce NTSC, but I allow the message for my own reasons.

I mention it, not because I think that is the reason for the problem, but to let anyone searching for a similar problem to take note.

Hi all, I'm back from he store.

I am confused now, what do I use to burn them? Nero Vision, NERO ROM, or Nero Express.... ? Are they all the same?.... In order to check for the ntsc as attar suggested, I need to open Nero Vision as he showed me on the image?...
I'm sorry, as I said before, I'm not familiar with any of this..
Thank you :)

Sorry to have confused the issue.
Go ahead and burn as before - using the Verbatims at 4x and test it on the standalone unit.
Only if there is still a problem, would you need to check the PAL/NTSC red herring that I threw in.

Hello,

Thank you attar, IHoe and Rotary! I changed the settings on the winavi converter to ntsc and it converted the file great. Then I opened Nero Vision and started to burn my DVD.. I didn't even know you could choose music to the menu, which I did.
The mistakes I made, were these:
When I clicked ADD FILES, it added them and I don't remember if there I got a pop up that said to click yes to.. ( I honestly don't remember what it was), but I guess I had to say no, because each file was burned individually. As a result, I got three files on my main menu, one played the last half of the movie, the other the first half and the next one has the menu (this one you can't navigate through) ... I'm going to try again... But at least I was able to watch it on my TV!!

Ok, I got this message and I get stuck here... what do I need to do?.. Yes or Not?

One or more VOB files that contain multiple segments can be imported as a single video if their video properties match.
Do you want to merge VOB segments into a single video if possible? (If you click No, each segment will be treated as an individual video.)

I think I pressed Yes before and I got three different files on my menu..
