I replaced a 160GB hard drive in my Dell Dimension4700, with a 320GB WD Caviar. When I go into my BIOS it shows the 320GB drive, but when I click on properties for my C drive it shows total space of 127GB and 112GB free. Those are the same numbers that showed for my 160GB hard drive. Why don't the numbers reflect the new hard drive.

Maybe you partitioned the hard drive when you installed Windows.
Restart your computer with the windows disc once it's at the blue screen displaying the hard drives to choose from, check to see if the drive has been split.
Might have to reformat the drive, unless you don't mind having 2 different partitions.

Go into Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management, and under Storage, click on Disk Management.

Look to see if there is any unallocated space, and if so, create a separate partition, or allocate that space to your C drive.

Window SP 2 is installed. That's what it says on the disc I used. Is there a disadvantage to have two partitions as opposed to reformatting under one partition

depends on what the drive is for. in my pc, the hd is a 160gig partitioned in 2, a 40 gig for windows & 120 for data. if windows messes up badly then i redo the 40 without worry on the 120.

I always partition my drives. I have my OS, and a few programs, on one partition, and all of my data files and most programs, on a separate partition.

That way, if I crash, and can't recover from the crash, thus having the necessity to format the OS partition, and install again, I don't have to worry about my data being lost. All programs will have to be installed again, but my data files are right where it was before.
