I recently found this device in a catalog. It claims to be able to plug in between a dvd player and dvd burner to make backup copies. Will it only work with single layer dvd-5's or is it compressing the video automatically?

You have got it wrong...All this is is a Video Stabilizer which is used to Bypass Macrovision Copy protection...these Have been arround for 20 years, I used to have one for Copying VHS Tapes and poeple use them for copying DVD"s to VHS or DVD"s from a DVD Player to a DVD Video Recorder or From VHS or DVD player to a Capture Card on your PC...It doesn"t do any Compression or anything like that it just removes Macrovision and Stabilizes and Boosts the Signal...You can get them From $30 to $100 depending on the Quality of the Device.....Cheers

So if a person had a standalone dvd recorder and this video stabilizer they can copy the video only, no menus or subtitles, just like if they were copying the dvd to a vhs? And the standalone dvd recorder would do the compression to make all the video fit on one dvd-r?
