What you consider "cheap" and where you are located would be helpful. You can find used 802.11b routers really inexpensively now. You might even get one for free from Goodwill or Salvation Army in the US.

Keep in mind the DS only "talks" WEP. You can't set your wireless router to WPA and use it as an access point. If you don't have a router now and are wanting one solely for the DS (you aren't going to use it for a home network) then give some consideration to the DS specific USB dongle for wireless access.

i have a router just now but the ds doesnt detect it. It doesn't seem to have a brand name on it either however it does say 801.11b on the front if that means anything?

Is your router set to WEP or WPA? Is it set on highest broadcast strength? Do other things detect it?

Here's how I determine whether it is the router or the config.

I disable encryption completely on the router and the device, to see if the devices can connect.

If they can, there's probably something wrong with the Encryption config.

If they can't, there might be something wrong with the config. (ex. Wrong SSID, Wrong channel, etc.)

I concr with Dailun. It sounds like DS config.

What game/application are you trying to connect with? With SSID broadcasting on for the router, try making a new connection and try it with different games/programs.

Man, you are getting SOOOOOO ahead of yourself or haven't told us the whole story.

Right now you should be concerned about getting the "Test Connection" to work on your DS. Your original post implied that your DS couldn't see the router.

Does "Test Connection" work? If it does, then you can move to the next step. If it doesn't, you have to get that resolved first.

There are resources here that might be able to help you, but it's difficult if not impossible if we don't have accurate information.

Yes, quite.

With SSID broadcast on and MAC filtering off on your router, go to the Wi-Fi Connection Setup screen on the DS and see if you can see the network.
