Nero 8 StartSmart Not Working

I cannot launch Nero 8 using the Desktop StartSmart Icon anymore. It has been working fine for a couple of months, but now when I double click on the shortcut icon the loading graphic just goes round and round for about 1 minute - then my computer freezes.
Only way to get going again is to force shutdown and reboot.
Strange thing is that all the different programs in my Nero will open no problem if i go through START, All Programs, Nero, Vision/Recode etc.
This way they open within 15 seconds - but try StartSmart and no ways.

Anyone had this and can maybe recommend some fixes for me to try?

I have not loaded any new programs for this to happen, and have even tried removing one program at a time to see if it helps. No luck with this either. I have also done a complete uninstall using Nero's clean tool but it makes no difference.

uninstall it, then use the version clean tool from nero website, then install fresh...

Rotary - thanks for your help but I have tried everything.

Any other suggestions would be welcome. I have written to Nero support but I am not sure I will get an answer. Strange thing is that it does not always happen - maybe 2 out of 3 attempts to open StartSmart fail. Thanks again
