ps2 only plays silver disks

Can anyone help my kids ps2 now only plays silver backed discs and will not play ps1 or the blue backed disks.
I did a search on the net and they all suggested playing with the wheel altering the height of the laser,so i say there for a few hours patiently turning the wheel until hoorah the blue discs play but not the ps1 disks,then i tried a silver backed disk with the laser in that position and that wouldnt load.
Has the laser had it or is there anything else i can do .

You could also clean the laser lens with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. Note: there are two lens the one you can see and the one below it. Your going to need Torx screwdrivers to get to the second one.

Thanks for your reply.
Just seen a video on youtube of a guy cleaning his as well as cleaning the lense with a cotton bud he also used compressed air sticking the nozzle right underneath the lenses and this seemed to work so thats gonna be the next thing i try .
Hope it works i will let you know how it goes.

Don't be surprised if you find a lot of dust on the lens. ;) I know I did when I clean my cousin's PS2. It was like dust bunny world in there.

No luck with an airduster blew it everywhere and had some dust and fluff but no luck with playing anything but silver backed discs they also seem to take a while to load but do in the end.

Have you also tried cleaning both laser lens with rubbing alcohol/cotton swab? That usually does the trick, another option would be to tweak the laser POT.

Ok Firstly thanks for your replies guys i have cleaned the lense using alcohol and it still only plays silver backed discs but they load a lot quicker now.
Gonna try adjusting the wheel again now to see if i can get it to play blue backed discs.

No have'nt done that how do i get to it i know the balck palstic piece that surrounds the lense comes of other than that im lost.

Your going to need a Torx screwdriver. There are like 4 screws on the bottom side of the laser unit itself.

A big thank you to all who helped with my query.
I have cleaned both lenses and after just a few clicks of the white cog not only does it load all games but does so much quicker too.
