I'll start by saying I'm more or less new to this HDA/HDL thing. Apologies if these questions have been answered before, I had a look around the forums but there's nothing concrete that I can find.
I know HDloader's not being sold any more, but people keep saying "download it rather than buy HDA, it's better", etc, etc.
I'm happy to buy HDadvance and use that, BUT how would I download HDL and be able to use it. I know about a .elf file which I've downloaded and an image of DVDloader which I've got too. How do I run them? Swap Magic? Do I have to use Swap Magic everytime I want to play a game from the HDD?
I've also heard about some memory card exploit, but I don't know much about it.

I've got an old Swap Magic, a Maxtor HDD and the PS2 network adaptor. What am I best going for; HDadvance or HDloader? If it's HDL how does it work with only a downloaded version?

Thanks to ANYONE who can give me some advice - most appreciated!

About exploit u mentioned, here's good guide for doing it:
http://sksapps.com/index.php?page=hdexploit.html
It needs an original PSX game to be able to boot.

But to use downloaded HDL from disc, and to boot it with Swap Magic, if u wont like the exploit way, do like the guide says, that part when u create the disc, but make it to boot HDloader.
But well, there's a burn-ready image of HDL on the site too if u wanna use that.

Oh and whick's better, HDL or HDA, well, since HDA is for USB-HDD, it's slower, and not so good compatibility than HDL whick is for normal IDE HDDs. So HDLoader 0.8c is best.
But one thing HDA beats HDL is USB-HDD mobility :)

Thanks Quezacotl! I've got the loader to work now using Swap Magic (mine was too old, so I borrowed a newer one). That exploit sounds a lot simpler so I'll give that a go too :)

The basic idea for the exploit is that when u put title.db file and boot.elf named elf file in BxDATA-SYSTEM folder(where x is a letter corresponding to the console's region ?e.g.: E for the EU, A for the USA or I for Japan), and it boots.
So the file tree would be like this on memory card:
/BEDATA-SYSTEM/TITLE.DB
/BEDATA-SYSTEM/BOOT.ELF
All u have to do is to manage to get those files in memory card any way, and it works.
Since u have swap magic, u could boot uLaunchElf from USB-stick with it, and manually move the files on memory card(slot 1). Would save discs :)

Ok. I follow the tutorial, but instead of loading the HD loader, it goes into LaunchELF v4.06. Then I have HD loader on a memory stick and can lauch that from there, but shouldn't it go straight into HDL?

Thanks again!

Well, just rename the HDL to BOOT.ELF and replace it with BOOT.ELF in BEDATA-SYSTEM folder, and in next boot, it boots straight to HDL.

But u may want to still have the uLaunchElf, because it can do lots of useful stuff, so u can also specify default quickboot in uLE as HDL, and copy the HDL elf to MC.

Hmm...replaced the BOOT.ELF on the memory card with HDL_V0.8C.ELF (but renamed it BOOT.ELF) and it hangs on a black screen on start-up. Any ideas?

The HDL file could be corrupted, or u renamed it wrong, maybe a space somewhere or "," istead of "." between extension and name...
