I have had failures off & on trying to burn DVDs with Nero 7 on my system. I had the drive replaced by Dell before the warranty went out on my PC. Worked for a while but started having problems again. Was getting about 50% good, but now have burned a dozen or more coasters. I have read through this forum & tried a lot of the suggestions, but I haven't had any luck.

Burner: NEC ND-3530A in slot "0"
(had original in slot "1" but when I replaced it, it wouldn't work in "1" so I moved it up to "0")

Have had failures:
1) Burning data DVDs
2) Burning Nero Vision DVD movies
3) Burning DVD files created by Adobe Premiere Elements
Note: was able to burn 2 DVD with APE, but now it fails, too.

Have tried:
1) Resetting DMA mode on Burner drive. Was able to change, but no effect
2) Updated firmware on burner (to 3.01). No effect
3) Disabled IMAPI. No effect
4) Changed Media (have used Fujifilm & Sony). No effect
5) Tried burning slower (6x & 4x). No effect

I did run the NeroInfo tools & it was able to burn a DVD for the test. Not sure if that means anything.

Here is the latest failure's log file:

dma is still off on 2 drives

do you have sata hard drives? 2 of them.

i would say check your bios for AUTO DETECTing drives on bootup.

also try installing ForceASPI layer...

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

I have tried a couple of times to get the DMA up on the other two drives, but haven't had much luck. I removed the Primary IDE Channgel via the conrol panel & rebooted. Right now, both Device 0 is set to "DMA if Available" and has a current mode of "Ultra DMA Mode 2." Device 1 is also set to "DMA if Available, but the current mode is PIO. Its the same as when I've tried removing it & rebooting - I've never seen the Device 1 on DMA mode. Thoughts?

Yes, I have two HD - both SATA.

I used the files for installing the V.71.2 winaspi first. It added two of the files but not the wowpost.exe & winaspi.dll. I then tried the forceaspi. No difference.

OK. Tried the force aspi again, and it worked. Yeah.

Tried burning a DVD AND IT WORKED!!!! A bit slow, but at least it finished. Thanks for the hint about winaspi; I thought it wasn't need since I was on XP.

The files I was burning were on the primary HD, which seems to be set with DMA right now. However, the 2nd drive is where I store most of my video & photos, which is what I'm backing up or burning DVDs from most of the time. Any hints about getting it "up to speed?"

I should also add, when I look at the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, there are three items:
- Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 266F
- Primary IDE Channel
- Intel(R) 82801FR SATA AHCI Controller

I'm pretty hardware stupid, but when I look at other posts, its implies there should be a secondary IDE channel I can follow the "remove & reboot" process on. It looks the same in the Nero Info tool, and I cannot "expand" the Primary Channel like described in other posts.

not too sure on this as 1 sata hd is on dma and other not? hmmm....

ok did you uninstall this

- Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 266F

then reboot?

also in this case uninstall the drive itelf too in drives link not ide link.

these dvdrw drives did you install them? if so did you set the jumpers correctly?

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

I tried uninstalling the Ultra ATA & the 2nd HD itself via the drive section. On reboot, both HDs were set to DMA if Available, but currently at "Not application." On reboot, they were back to the same status as before - Device 0 has current mode of DMA & Device 1 has PIO.

I did install burner. It was a replacement when the DVD+/-RW drive that came with the computer kept failing. The old drive was in the 1 slot, but the ND-3530a wouldn't work there, so on the advice of Dell, I swapped their locations. (The second drive is just a DVD reader). I checked both of the DVD drives, and both have their jumpers set to the leftmost pair - CSEL setting if I'm reading the docs correctly. That's the way Dell sets them up by default & they advised to leave it that way.

I tried burning with Adobe Premeire Elements last night, but no luck. Not surprising, as the other posts seem to imply that it doesn't play well with Nero nor is it the best to burn with anyway.

hmm something not right here?
are the drives on the same ide cable? if so end of cable set as master jumper, middle plug set as slave.

if both on separate ide cables set plug drives in at end of cable and set both as master... (try this if not already like it, need 2 cables though, thats if you have a spare ide on mobo)

(if both on 1 cable, that maybe why only 1 PRIMARY is showing??? just guessing on that.)

enable imapi back

note: (i have seen drives get working with no jumper in!) even try removing the rom drive, leave burner on its own and test a burn

did you check bios for auto detecting?

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

I forgot to check for the autosensing. The two DVD drives share the same IDE cable, but I think the end of the IDE cable is in the "bottom" drive. I'll swap them and see what happens.

In the mean time, I tried to burn a DVD last night and it failed. Here's the log. I don't see the winaspi getting picked up.

Heres something on this error

Quote:
90% of the time this type of error message is caused by poor media, poor power to the recorder, or an optical head needing cleaning, or a drive needing to be serviced.

But it's only 90% of the time. On a rare occasion I've seen this caused by driver conflicts. Either from other software, or drivers for the IDE Controller.
Poor media - Try more than one brand of media. For example: TDK, Verbatim, Imation, Yamaha, HP, etc.

Poor IDE cable or incorrect cable - For higher end recorders these days if you use the 40pin cable you can have all sorts of unusual symptoms. It would be best to use an ATA-133 80 wire cable.

Driver conflicts - If you have or had another CD recording software installed on your system, its drivers could be conflicting with our software. This is rare for this symptom, but it does occur. Uninstall any other recording software and make sure all its drivers have been removed with it. Then reinstall Nero and make sure to use the latest version we have posted on our website.

Defective recorder - The optical head on your recorder may need cleaning or servicing. Or it's possible the circuit board on your recorder has an open coil or blown diode or resistor. Any of these could cause the error. Only solution would be to send the drive in for service to the recorder manufacturer.

I don't see the winaspi getting picked up.
ASPI is not necessarily displayed in ALL Nero logs, in most cases it depends on which version of Nero is in use.

You are using good quality discs, Verbatim? so I dont think thats a problem.

Checked the IDE cables and everything was OK (end on the top/0/writer). While I had the case open, I re-seated power & IDE on both DVD drives. I guess I don't know where to check for the auto-sensing. Where do I look?

Got a can of air & blew out the drive in case I was having a dust issue.

Tried to burn another DVD after that this morning and it failed, all (exactly) the same as last night, with the "no seek" error.

Yes, I am using Verbatim -R DVDs. Was using some Sony prior to this, but after reading a lot of posts I decided to switch, in case I just had a bad lot of DVDs.

This is just getting so frustrating. I'd buy a new drive, but I'm afraid that nothing will change if its a driver/software/system level issue. Is it time to get a new drive?

(if both on 1 cable, that maybe why only 1 PRIMARY is showing??? just guessing on that.)

enable imapi back

note: (i have seen drives get working with no jumper in!) even try removing the rom drive, leave burner on its own and test a burn

did you check bios for auto detecting?
as above!

also

look in bios for auto detect drives is enabled... most times its hold delete key on boot up, but should have on screen prompt saying on boot up , read the screen fo more details.

I couldn't find anything regarding autosensing for IDE. However, in the drives section, there were two entries for the IDE. The Master listed the burner and ON. The other one (slave) was OFF. It showed the default as being ON, so I switched it, just to give it a try. Now the Device 1 that has been in PIO Mode is on Ultra DMA Mode 2. Hmm...

I tried to burned a DVD and it worked.

I'll try a couple more and see how it goes. As with last week, I was able to burn one and then it would start failing again. I haven't been able to burn two in a row for quite a while.

No luck. Tried to burn a data DVD and it failed about 60% of the way through. Data was on the 2nd HD - the one that still appears to have the DMA off. (For the last one, the data came from the other drive.) Here's the log:

Tried burning the files a couple more times. Had luck once after I moved the files from the D: drive to the C: drive. Tried that trick again with a 2nd set of files (moving from D to C) and that one failed with the "NO SEEK" error.

To me, that means that the DMA setting on the D drive isn't affecting this. Thoughts?

I am at a loss as to where you obtained this particular firmware for this burner, ALL my sources indicate that the correct firmware should be 1.03c.....this is more than likely why your log shows as

EDIT: I see you are using a Dell comp, then check out this link for your appropriate firmware...there is 2 for the Dell comp

- ATAPI (AT Attachment Packet Interface) is an interface between your computer and attached CD-ROM drives and tape backup drives. Most of today's PC computers use the standard Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) interface to address hard disk drives. ATAPI provides the additional commands needed for controlling a CD-ROM player or tape backup so that your computer can use the IDE interface and controllers to control these relatively newer device types.
ATAPI is part of the Enhanced IDE (EIDE) interface (also known as ATA-2).

You have now increased the speed of your burn, although you are using GOOD quality discs, try slowing burn to 4X

Yes, Rotary, that's where I got the firmware (cdrinfo). I tried reflashing the 1.03c first, then did the 1.04c, both with no luck, before putting on the 3.01 I found on the CDRInfo Board.

I have tried putting the max speed at 4,6,8 and 12. It has not seemed to make much difference. I can certainly try it at 4 again. When it does burn, it reports in Nero to be burning at slower than the selected max speed, sometimes down to 1.1x.

I tried that ForceASPI last week (see above). I guess I can try it again.
