this one hard to decide what subforum to put this in. i'm not sure whats wrong. i have an older phat ps2 that is not doing much of anything. when i boot it up it doesn't even go to the playstation config browser. what i'm wondering, is it possible for the hard drive to have gotten messed up and i just need to restore the original files. ps2 does not have error codes like the xbox, that i'm aware of. so i'm at kinda of loss as what to do. could use some advice. thanks for your time and patience.

the ps2 will boot, regardless if a hdd is installed; the hdd is optional, and requires the network adapter for it to work. i don't think it's possible to mess up the system software, as there's no way accessing it.

if it doesn't boot, then something might be wrong with the motherboard.

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure

got a whole lot more to list . . .

so i guess there's no way to figure out what on the motherboard could be bad......too bad, i have 3 ps2's and i'm not sure what chip may be bad in any one of them. thought i might be able to piece together a system from the ones that i have. but sounds like there is no way to troubleshoot. thanks for the reply.

Does it power on and stay on, But you get a black screen? If yes, check the A/V cable to tv for a bad spot (usually the RF switch)
If that is ok, the check the contacts of the A/V (back of the PS2)
for dirt or broken contacts.
If that is ok, the problem is probably the mother board
