Hey guys I was just curious is there a possibility while backing up DVD's that their is a message sent through the internet to movie companies that inform them that their product is being decrypted, etc. I just dont want to wake up and have federal agents standing outside my house. I realize all I would have to do is just have to unhook the cable modem to prevent all this. However that just sucks too.

theres nothing wrong about being paraniod, you could however have a separate machine not connected to the net solely for your computing needs. You do realise of course that smarter and more paranoid people than either of us have been caught.

Now you got me concerned!! can this happen im on dial up and im never connected to the net while doing any part of backing up movies but still that doesnt seem right they can use your computer like that and wouldn't your firewall catch it.

I've ripped about 100 dvds, and my internet connection is always on, and I don't use a firewall to control program access to the internet and yet I have yet to have any 3-letter government agency come knocking on my door. To my knowlege there are no movies or cds like that circulating through the world(though those cds with copy protection programs embedded may do what you have described at a later date)
So y'all are safe from your ripped dvds telling the mpaa, besides, you could probaly successfully argue a personal use backup(unless y'all are pirates...)

This is an amazingly imformative site with many places to find information and help. Please support it.

i guess every one is a pirate in some form but msb5150

Paranoid Android!

Just kidding. I've done my share of movies with an 'always on' connection with no Federales showing up.

I've got a bad attitude, a chihuahua with an even worse one and Fair Use on my side.

If it makes you feel better you can download the freeware version of Zone Alarm that doesn't let any apps access the internet without your permission. I like it

LMAO. You guys are cracking me up with your paranoia.
Picture this....

How many dvd writers have been sold? What...several hunnerd thousand? I'd venture to say that 20% of the folks who have bought em, copy, or at least try to copy commercial dvd's.

So....if 20% of those who have writers copied one movie a week, and if the DVD sent out a distress *I'm being ripped* message to the movie company, that would amount to several thousand (over 5,000) dvd's being ripped every day. That's not counting the folks who rip to make VCD's, Divx, or other format videos. That'd surely up it by 50% at least.

Of course we all know that the movie companies have huge groups of people and puters standing by, monitoring the internet, funnelling each *rip report* to the Feds for prompt investigation.

Oh yes....tens of thousands a week. Highly likely in my opinion. You better unplug that cable modem. Surely they already have yer number. =)

There is no problem so big, that a brick placed against the proper skull cannot fix =)
