Indeed, though with the new 45nm Quad CPUs and the upcoming high end GPUs - there will soon once again be a real advantage to spending more.

They won't be. But of late spending even any more than $200 for a component has given little gain.

yeah thats because they jump from 65 to 45nm - which doesn't really increase the performance that much. The clock speed is about the same. but the price increased, and more cores

I was comparing the Q6600 to the Q9450 actually - an extra 266mhz, the move to 45nm, a bit more cache and a slightly improved architecture - at stock offering around a 25% performance increase, but when overclocked much less than that given the comparative 'safety zones'. In the UK at least, the latter is almost twice as much.

hmm...after you've said that, i have to agree.
But is it necessary to buy a $2000 gaming pc now? next year newer and better parts are coming out, unless they don't upgrade often.

The Q9450 can go about as far as the Q6600 on a safe voltage - but the Q9450 starts at a higher speed.

Indeed - you can push a Q9450 to a huge speed for a one-off, but on a 24/7 basis, it's thoroughly disadvised.

oc is good...but too much is bad...seriously, no wonder some people don't overclock their cpus

It'll be worth doing once the new GPUs come out soon - as long as you do have a Quad core CPU (especially if it's overclocked a bit) the CPU won't be much of a bottleneck for gaming for quite a while.

i see what you mean. Good CPU - Oced, and a good powerful GPU. The system will last quite long. ONLY if you spend a lot. If you buy a budget one, then no. Like my one, it will last for like half a year
