Thank thats intresting about the HDMI. We'll I have learned a lot thats for sure. I can deffinately say then from the 4 I was going to use the Gigabytes are out the window. Down 2 cards then

ASUS Rampage Formula X48: http://www.awd-it.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=3691

or

DFI Lanparty UT X48-T2R: http://www.awd-it.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=3811

Going to wait till the launch of the new nVidia Graphics card as well and see what people say. I really want the DFI as it looks beautifull and that insane heatsink sticking out the back is just crazy. The ASUS Rampage looks like it also has had numerous good reviews and easy to overclock. SO I think at least between the 2 they are safe bets to being good boards . I hope :-)

Thanks again.

I personally would go with the Asus - there's more to motherboards than a pretty heatsink. Also, I edited my previous post - not sure if you saw or not:

Yes I saw that. OK thanks for the advice I will use that for the OS. I agree with you on the heatsink and by the looks of things the BIOS is meant to be complicating because there is too much info, even for professionals. So I am going to try and find some reviews of the ASUS Rampage Forumla online. :-)

Thanks again.

velociraptor for OS liek sam said.

sam i have mine at 1.4 right now, i pushed it to 1.5, but the extra 300MHz, IMO wasnt worth it, so i didnt push it. it did stable prime for 4 hours, and did multiple tests of 3dmark (CPU test)

I do actually yes, much more professional. That voltage for a 65nm chip is fine, but I wouldn't go higher. 45nm chips can barely take any overvolting before their longevity is significantly impacted though.

If I overclock the Q9450, would it be in a stable and ok state to put into another motherboard in the future OR would I have to set it back to its original speed? Sorry for such a novice question.

Thanks again.

the motherboard does the OCing for the CPU, so if you take it out and put it in another board, it would automatically go back to the original specs, voltages etc.

I wouldn't think much of anything you hear about the GTX280 until very shortly before it comes out.

its only 9:30 over here in iowa.

@sam, i thought that 1.35 was the safe voltage for a 45nm chip?

I've heard many conflicting answers - so far the only safe one seems to be not to overvolt the chips at all. I think the 45nm Duals got clearance for 1.35v but not the quads.

18 but thats beside the point :P
what about you?

and Quads will always need more V than their dual core buddies. esp the xenon i put. speed binned and made to stay stable under presure

haha, oh really?
20.

Quad cores will indeed need more voltage - but you can't give it to them, or they'll fail within weeks. The downside of the 45nm Quads is you'll either have to settle for periodic replacement, or live with a small overclock.

i havent heard any problems with the quads in the last month or so. looks like intel has sorted it out, and the Q9450 are typically hitting 3.6+ w.o problems now.

its just that at the begging people were putting the 65nm voltages through them, which would over volt them too much at over 1.38

all seems to be fine now. and they clock well, and are very cool.

OK thank you all for your help so far. I am now at the stage of investing in my RAM. Can anyone recommend me the fastest and best 8GB of DDR2 (4x 2GB). I am going to overclock the Q9450 to about 3.2ghz per core using the Asus Rampage.

Can someone please help me choose the best, I am not so concerned about the money but instead being able to overclock the Q9450 and having the most powerfull RAM to support my PC running a 64bit as powerfull as possible and helping FSX go as fast as possible. I use CS3 and Cubase as well.

Many many thanks again.

3.2 is 400 x 8 so any 8GB of PC6400 will do.

go for either corsair or ocz or geil imo. (no fansy heasinks needed :) )
