Well just bought a new system, and I was getting it for the gaming! Im looking into buying a new video card for it, and went to a store and seen a few. What do you think is the better card for my money?

Geforce 8600 GTS 512mb ddr3 pci-e
8600 GT 1GB DDR2 PCI-E
GeForce 8800 GT 512mb DDR3 PCI-E

Or if there is osomething better out there, please let me know. Keep in mind I will have to upgrade my PSU as well, so let me know what will be the best, and what PSU I will need.

I just want to be able to play the latest games (COD4, Crysis, ect.) with a decent speed. Please Help!

Also will it be any problems with that kind of upgrade on a prebuilt HP system? Will it handle it?

PS - I also noticed that on some boxes of these cards, there was a pci-e 2.0? What is that, and how do I know if my slot supports or has that?

GeForce 8800 GT 512mb DDR3 PCI-E is good but for a not much more you might want to look at one of these.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis...ion=8800GTS+G92

I would buy from newegg.com not a store you will be able to get abetter card for money from newegg

as far as the pci 2.0 you will have to ask your mother boarb manuufacturer

and as far as psu I think If you call the maker of the psu and tell them your specs they should be able to help you, make sure to get name brand though. I am thinking 500w is enough but check to be sure, use newegg.com for that to.

You will need a new PSU. You are also limited to nvidia cards as only they will run cool enough not to overheat too much in a badly cooled HP case. Go with the 8800GT not the GTS as the latter is not actually any faster.

I can argue that sammorris. There is a definite difference in performance between the 8800GTS 512MB and the 8800GT 512MB. Is it noticeable in most games? no. But there is a difference.

In all honesty though, unless you find a good deal on the 8800GTS 512MB, you'd get a better deal with the 8800GT.

I agree on the PSU. Get a quality 500W. Good brands include OCZ, Corsair, Zalman, Gigabyte, Seasonic, Silverstone, and the like. Make sure you don't skimp on the PSU. It is the most important part of the whole system.

And PCI-E 1.0 to PCI-E 2.0 doesn't matter. As long as you have a PCI-Express slot you can use any PCI-E video card.

Just make sure you can actually make upgrades to the system before you buy any parts. There is a difference between PCI Express and PCI. If you only have PCI slots you'd be better advised to find a new motherboard as there are no good cards for PCI.

The best brands on that list are Corsair, Seasonic and Zalman, in that order.

Yep the 8800GT is better than the GTS. I sold my GTS, got a brand new GT and still had change (at the time). Defo worth the money as they cost 30% less than they did when released, and they were pretty cheap for what you got even then....
You can actually get the 8800GT 1gb now for the original price of the 512mb version.

We were comparing the G92 8800GTS (512MB), not the older, slower, G80 version (320, 640MB)

I think the 8800GTS G92 is really nice. It's got the horsepower to do high resolutions and still get near overkill framerates. I average 60-65 FPS in FEAR at 1920 x 1200 with 4xAA and 8xAF.

If you want best best buy then buy Radeon HD 4850. It's faster than
8800GTS but has the same price. Here is the review in Crysis....Is' FAST.

One shot, one kill, no luck, just skill.

Best value, certainly the HD4850. The HD4870 is even faster still, though.

agreed, the 4850 is one of the best values in a long time. Faster than my card by a good bit and about the same price.
