I have a DELL Inspiron 1300 laptop and i want to upgrade the cpu.(I currently have an Intel Celeron 1.6GHz)
I have absolutely no knowledge of processors whatsoever. I stumbled across another forum where someone has the same laptop and found that the 'Pentium M 760 Centrino 2.0Ghz CPU 533MhZ SL7SM' should work with my laptop.
Heres the link: [url=http://www.notebookforums.com/thread208675.html][/url]
These processors are reasonably priced on ebay but i wouldn't know if it was a good choice or not.
I have a screenshot of CPU-Z running on my notebook:

Could someone help me out. I want something that will be fully compatible with my laptop and something that is fairly decent...It doesn't need to be anything special, just a worth-while upgrade to what i have now.

to paste hyperlinks and them be clickable, just copy and paste the address, don't bother with the square bracket url tag that afterdawn tells you to use, it doesn't work unless you use a name.
As for the CPU upgrade, I'd say the exact same thing as that guy really. It *should* work, but no 100% guarantees, and be careful.

Thanks for the quick reply! Would you recommend this CPU?
...Also, what is likely to go wrong if it doesn't work - is it really that risky? (Or are you telling me to be carefull in terms of static etc.)

The pentium M is a big upgrade from the Celeron, but it's the fastest CPU you can use for that board anyway. As for being careful, if it works in your board it works, if not then the laptop will just not boot when you power it on, it's about that simple really. You shouldn't have any heat concerns.

oh right, does this mean that the laptop will then be completely dead or should it work again when the original processor is back in there? (sorry for my lack of hardware knowledge, its all new to me lol)
I was having heat problems with this laptop recently and i thought it was on its way out. I took out the heatsink today and found loads of dust/fluff in there - its running alot cooler now that i've cleaned it out, so i thought about upgrading the cpu.

Nono, it should work fine when you put the old processor back.
As for the heat issue - it's thoroughly recommended that it's clean in there when you put the new CPU in as it may get slightly warmer than the old one.

If you didn't need to in order to get it working, then don't.

Used to up/down your fan speed for better cooling/lower noise - looks pretty decent.
As for the BIOS update, very little.

the 'ideal' CPU temp is probably about -25C, so essentially, 'as low as possible'
