I have the Hunt for Red October which I have now successfully backed up on to one TDK DVD-R.

However, the first two attempts failed.

For the first attempt, I simply used DVDXCopy XPress. It reported burn completed successfully. However, when I played back the copy on PowerDVD 5, it froze towards the end of the movie.

For the second attempt, I ripped the DVD using DVD Decryptor. Then I encoded and burned directly to my DVD-R using DVD Shrink(and Nero 6). The burn failed at the 97% mark!

For the third attempt, I again ripped the DVD using Decryptor. Then I encoded and burned the image to my hard drive using Shrink. I tested the image using PowerDVD 5, and playback seemed good. So, then I burned to a TDK DVD-R using Decyrptor this time. It worked!

Do any of you intelligent people out there have any idea why the DVDXcopyXpress did not work and why the second attempt(with direct burn using Nero) both failed?

For each attempt, I reauthored the DVD in the same way, accept for DVDXCopyXpress which basically allows no reauthoring.

Thanks in advance for all help!

When the problem is at the end of the disc it usually means the media is at fault. I've never had problems with the TDK DVD-Rs I've used, but it's possible your burner just doesn't like them. What burner do you have?

My burner is a Toshiba SD-R6012 DVD/CD combo burner. TDK's were recommended to me by the staff at 321 Studios, maker of Xcopy and Xcopy Xpress. They also recommended Fuji and Sony.

I see your point, however, as you can read above I used the exact same discs, the TDK DVD-R for all 3 attempts. The successful attempt worked with the TDK. That leads me to believe the problem lies somewhere else.

I've had spindles of good discs (Ritek Grade A) with a few bad ones, so I wouldn't assume the problem lies elsewhere. If it's not the media it would most likely be Nero or the drive itself, since those are the only common points between the failed burns. Since your're using Nero 6 I'd be surprised if it caused the problem. I can't really comment about your drive since I'm not familiar with it.

The important thing to understand is that almost all problems that only occur at the end of the disc are caused either by bad media or the combination of a specific drive and a specific media. Just because a certain brand of media is generally considered good, and it works fine with most burners, doesn't mean it works well with yours. I also had a friend who couldn't burn discs at full speed (on good media that's compatible with the burner) without errors until re-installing Windows, so I wouldn't rule anything out.

OK. I will definitely keep that in mind. Thank you. I will also look for other possible problems. I hope that others respond with some insight too.

Is it possible my McAfee AntiVirus or my live DSL connection could cause a problem? I always disable McAfee activeshield and disconnect my DSL connection.

By the way... Is Nero 6 good? I am looking for a very good overall program to replace Easy CD Creator 5 Basic that will burn audio CDs, data DVDs, etc.

I use RecordNow Max for almost everything (I use Alcohol 120% for copying protected CDs) ever since I started backing up DVDs. That's mostly because some older versions of Nero were known to cause many people problems with DVD backups and standalone compatibility and REcordNow Max has never failed me when I have good media. From what I've heard, Nero 6 is a good program to use and has fixed the DVD compatibility problems the old versions had, but I can't say from first hand experience.

BTW, I don't know if McAfee could cause problems, but it certainly shouldn't since you're disabling it, and I always have my DSL connection active when I burn.

Power DVD can corrupt the burning & playback of your DVDs. I use windvd with 100% results.

I also use Packard bell -R & +R, I get a 100% hit rate. Media is also critical. You need to experiment with media/software/hardwaare to find the combination that works for you & your requirements

Vurbal thanks for the tips...

Pulsar, thank you for your input, I stopped using WinDVD 4.0 and got PowerDVD long ago b/c it seemed to work so much better with my backups made from DVD Xcopy/Xcopy Xpress.

How can PowerDVD 5 corrupt the burn when I do not even have it loaded during the burn? I dont think PowerDVD 5 has any Terminate and Stay Resident Services(TSR's), unlike say for example Direct CD, that are lurking in the backgroud. Does it?

As burning DVDs in a very unstable process. It will corrupt at the drop of a hat. I shut EVERYTHING down before even reading the original. Just having certain software installed can & will screw it up for you!

Just to add to what Pulsar said, never forget the Windows wildcard. For example, I never have problems doing other things on my computer when I burn DVDs (and I've been doing it for over 14 months now) but some people do. It's all about figuring out what works on your system and sticking with that.

I concur with you entirely vurbal. Software companies can be quite sneaky!
