I have my PC now running a clean install of XP SP2 on a clean, fragment and error free drive, and it's very perky. However, are there advantages (security, performance, features etc.) to having Service Pack 3 that won't have a negative impact on this? I remember when SP2 first came out systems had big issues and would like to know if there's any reason to actually have SP3 before taking the risk.
Anyone got any personal experience they can share on this?
TIA
Sam

Thanks for the link - I think I'll pass, it doesn't seem to include any real security updates, and I don't need any more 'phone home' than I already have - I also want to keep ie6. Thanks.

i put it on my laptop, and i can tell a difference in speed, it cut the restoring windows from hibernation in half, and quickened the load times for programs as well. havent really noticed anything bad yet.

i put it on my family computer and i could also see a big speed difference. it was a 100% core usage and crashed constantly. so i had to reinstall xp. stick with sp2 until all the problems are worked out.

Interesting. I think I'll wait for a while then - XP's pretty stable with SP2 on nowadays...

There's a couple or so of safe ways to try SP3,inside a virtual pc if you have a spare copy of xp or as in the link below, image your hdd to another hdd & then install SP3 to the newly imaged drive & see if it shits itself, the other option is to create a backup image, which is basicly stored in another partition or transfered to dvd & can be used sorta like system restore except only better,i use ghost & acronis,if you ever want to try imaging & need help use the 2nd link as the site specializes in hard drive imaging & advice is free

Thanks for the advice scorp, but given the potential risk I think I'll give it a miss. You might also want to edit that post a bit, language like that doesn't go down too well around here...

I'm not sure if you mean that using windows does'nt go down to well round here..lmao.. or your mistaken about drive imaging as it's perfectly legal everywhere, simply because any attempt to put your hdd into another computer assuming you can get it to boot will cause all sorts of issues with having the wrong drivers for the hardware, even if you get over that hurdle you will then be asked for re-activation as windows will detect the hardware changes & if you own an OEM copy chances are you will have to phone activate, then you'll find out OEM versions are not transferable & your license key will be voided,it's not quite the piracy thing that your thinking of as they're usually cracked versions

no I mean language - the word in question came after "see if it" and before "itself"... Might seem harmless to you - but repetitive use of words like that is bannable - thought I might save you the risk.
