Hi guys,
im going to buy a processor,
i have been looking around, but i dont know exactly what im looking for.
im basically going to use this pc for gaming, so i will want something that is 2.6+ghz

but what exactly am i looking for?

1) i see that the AMD is much cheaper than intel, which of these two are better?

2) and there are also some amd processors that are cheaper compared to other amd processors although the clock speed is the same. eg 4000+/4600+, both are 2.4 however there price is different. what are these finer details that im looking at, do they really matter?

i know some of this has been overed in the loooong sticky, but its a bit old and a too long winded,
if somebody could take a minute or two out of their time to give me a 2 sentence summary i would very much appreciate it

this is all so hard :(
i just want to play games :(

thanks guys,
Mubs

intel cpu's are better for gaming even at the same clock speed as amd cpu's. but you cant just get a new processor and expect it to fit into your current motherboard. what motherboard do you have and what are the rest of you system spec?

GAMING COMPUTER - Intel q9550 @ 3.4ghz | EVGA GTX 260 core 216 | Gigabyte ds3l | 6gb Gskill DDR2 800 ram | Silverstone 700 watt psu | WD 640gb hdd | Seagate 300gb hdd | LG dvd burner | Samsung dvd burner | Antec p182 case | logitech 2.1 speakers | logitech g11 keyboard | Samsung 25.5in 1900x1200 monitor | 19in 1440x900 secondary monitor | Windows 7 64bit | SERVER - Gigabyte 785g motherboard | AMD Phenom 9650 | 6gb ram | three 1.5tb hdd | Seagate 1tb hdd | WD 750gb hdd | two 300gb hdd | Maxtor 200gb hdd | Ark rackmount case | CentOS 5.5

Hi there,
thanks for the reply.
im buying a new motherboard too.
but i first need to decide what sort of processor to buy,
you see the thing is.
i can buy an amd dual core 3ghz at the same price as the intel sual core 2 ghz.

does that still make intel better for gaming?

because im getting a whole extra ghz with the amd.

what do you think?
regards,
mubs

the cpu will be able to overclock to 3+ghz and will better than the amd cpu at 3ghz. what kind of ram do you have? if it is not ddr2 you will need to buy new ram.

The mhz of a CPU is pretty irrelevant these days - a 1.8Ghz Core 2 Duo based Pentium E will offer similar performance to a 3.6Ghz Pentium D of old. The same goes for Intel vs AMD now to a lesser extent. A 2.53Ghz E7200 will be as fast as a 3.2Ghz Athlon64 X2, and will overclock better, if you're into that sort of thing. However, you will need a decent motherboard like the P35-DS3L to accomplish that, which will set you back about 50 pounds, little more than the most basic of boards, but it's extra cost nonetheless.

right ok thanks.
im not really interested in overclocking (i might try it if i get bored one day :) )

but about this amd and intel war,
i read somewhere that its about the numbers 12, 20, and 31.
is it true that more work is done in one intel 'ghz'?
and therefore does that mean that the intel 'ghz' is practically worth 'more' than an AMD 'ghz'?

if it is... is there any sort of set ratio like there is in common everyday units?
eg 2.6 cm = 1 inch

so how much is the intel ghz worth if it was to be converted into an AMD ghz?

thanks so far mates.
Mubs

heh, if only it was that simple. In short, if you've got even a small amount of money to spend, an Intel CPU will work out better for you. Different Intel chips at the same clock speed are varyingly fast, you can't just convert them like that.

hehe how foolish of me...

so basically intel is better?
i thought that the amd was better for gaming though?

anyway,
check this link out,
it has a nice comparison of all the cpu's and graphics cards and much more... what do you think...?

I hear that rumour a lot - I've no idea who started it, but there isn't anything to it - if a CPU is faster overall, it's typically faster for games.

thanks for clearing that up,
i always wondered why people said that and found no answers to it.
anyway its back to the drawing board and im going to try and work out the balance of graphics card, cpu etc for my budget.

at this point im wondering if i should just buy an xbox 360, it will cost me much less and it will serve the same purpose (playing games) infact it will be better at serving that purpose.

What makes you say it will be better? A cheap gaming PC costs not a great deal more than a 360, and will certainly be more versatile.

Ultimately that will probably be the better option.
