hello all, iv'e had my pc for a long time now, and well its on its last legs, i've only bought new things when the old ones broke and only bought cheap ones, but now i have money to spend and i think i need a whole pc, i know a bit about pc's but not compared to you guys hence why i'm asking,what i have atm is:
ASROCK P4VM890 m/b
2 x 512 ddr2 (i think) ram
pentium 4 3.2
radeon x1950 graphics card
what i want is a silent, very fast, can handle the new games and ones to come with ease and very cool (as in temp) case so the comp runs nice and fast. i'm not worried to much about graphics card because there always bringing in new ones, but i want a pc that will last will the good basics to it. so my question to you is what if any should i keep of my current pc? the most noticeable thing i DO need is RAM and a case, mines falling apart and is quite loud. this is what i had in mind but is quite pricey and i can with your help cut the cost.
4gb 2 x 2gb ddr2 800mhz ram
intel core2 quad q9300 2.50 6mb cache cpu
coolermaster rc-690 case
evga s775 nforce 780i mobo
and a graphics card? because i will have to change the mobo due to the ram,

You don't want an EVGA motherboard, neither do you want one that uses an nvidia chipset. I'd recommend going with something like the Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R for lower cost and guaranteed reliability.
If you want a silent PC, you need to make some serious conscious design decisions. If you just want one that isn't really loud, it's not too hard. To get coolermaster cases to push good cooling you usually need to buy them extra fans, which adds noise. Your CPU and RAM are sound choices, for the brand of the RAM I recommend Corsair XMS2, very reliable stuff.
Graphics cards are where it gets tricky for a quiet PC - to be truly quiet they usually need the cooler replacing. Fortunately Asus have a few particular cards out with a very quiet cooler. If you're able to track one down, they look like this:

For a Quiet case, I recommend these two, based on personal experience of both, as they are very quiet right out of the box without needing to change the fans - this is actually more unusual than you might think. When the average user says something is 'silent' it usually means its actually very noisy, but not so noisy it's unpleasant.

Rather different styles, but both have the means to make a very quiet system (note, you have to set the fans to low speed in the Antec P182 to get this effect).
You will also need to get a power supply. For reasonable value with quietness and reliability involved, it doesn't get much better than this:

thanks for reply, i'm not sure on the case, i dont mind some sound as i'ld rather have a comp with noise which is cool than a hot silent comp, so what i want is a sleek looking case with a very good coolng system, i'll wait for now for a graphics card as the one i got should be ok untill after xmas? and i was thinking around a 600 - 800 psu any ideas?

I use the first of the two links I provided, that exact case, and my PC runs very cool (CPU reaches a max of 41 degrees under full load, and the graphics card reaches less than 60) and I run the fans at an even slower speed than usual for absolute silence. If the case is designed right, you can have a perfectly quiet PC with no adverse effects on cooling.
Just be aware that it might be your GPU causing the noise...

ok thanks, i think i got the basics covered, i just ran a 3dmark test and score 14061 with what i have, is that any good?

That depends which version - I'm guessing probably 03 or 05 - it's been a while since anyone has used those, you ought to give a 3dmark06 score really.

Looking good. I provided you with a link to a good Power supply at the bottom - just be aware that for the RC-690 to cool as well as cases like the Lexa, it needs fans that aren't provided with it - these are your best bet:

yes, but it only comes with three fans installed, front rear and side, you have to buy the rest.
