I've been trying multiple methods and different things to burn movie files to a dual layer DVD disc, and nothing is working. The strange thing is, DL burning was working OK a couple of months ago (and now isn't), and single layer disc burning still works OK. The things I've tried:
* Using Nero, IMGBurn and DVDFab;
* Using VOB, VTS, etc files vs ISO;
* Tried different burning speeds (4x, 2.4x, 2x);
* Tried different media - TDK and Verbatim (both rate high quality);
* Closed down programs running in the background;
* Clean uninstalled Nero, DVDFab, then reinstalled;

All give the same error (Nero logfile below).

Does anyone have any ideas? The only things I've read on threads and haven't tried is (1) getting a lense cleaning disc (if this was the solution why is single layer DVD burning still working), and (2) update firmware - but I'm having trouble sourcing an update for my Optorite DD1601...

A couple of possibilities:

1) Your Optorite DD1601 could be going bad, it's what, a 4 yr old drive?

2) Corrupted firmware. You have the most current that I could find. Here's a link for the firmware if you want to refresh.

3) You are now getting the newer DLs made with the inverse stack procedure and your drive isn't compatible with them.

Solutions to the above:

See if you can find Verbatim DLs rated at 2.4x max.

Buy a new drive.

Yeah, the drive is getting old now. I'll try the firmware refresh and media suggestion and see how it goes...then it might be a replacement drive.

Thanks for your response, appreciate it. I'll post the results once tested.

Also I'm sorry to burst your bubble but TDK DL media is NOT high quality. Stick with Verbatim DLs MIS and burn them 2.4X in Imgburn, not outdated nero6.6.0.18 which is a great version but not for DL burns.

I looked at the table here - http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
which lists TDK as 1st class media, but now I notice is doesn't show DL discs...so will stick with Verbatim, thanks.

If you read down to the end of that page you will see that TDK media can be made by upwards of 6 different companies. I would stay away from SL discs unless you get a stack of TY TDKs. Use Verbatim MIS for DLs that we all know is the best there is.

Finally..it works (though I had to get a new drive)!

Got a Lite On (SHM 165P6S), and the DL burning worked first time. Shame I had to go through about 10 DL discs.

Thanks for the pointers Hobbit112 and Garmoon.

glad you got it sorted. You'll like the lite-ons. And a big thanks for letting us know what the problem was; so others may benefit from your misery! LOL
