hi first of all i'm a complete noob. If you explain anything, explain as though i'm a complete idiot/retard.

This is what i know you need:

motherboard
cpu
memory (ram)
case
cooling

that's basically all i know.

This is my trial and error stage so i want to do something very cheap something under
£400.

I'm not sure it's possible though. If possible could you suggest which things i should get which match up. And also i've got lots of vouchers so can i get whatever is needed from pcworld

You also need:

-PSU (power supply unit)
-Hard drive
-Dvd drive
-Video card

The CPU usually comes with a fan so unless you are unsatisfied by it and want a better one you don't have to go buy one. In terms of telling you what parts you should get we have to know what kind of computer you are trying to build. Are you making a gaming computer? Are you going to overclock etc.

You can get most of the stuff from PC world, but even with vouchers you might still end up paying more, and their product range isn't the best. You might want to save those for getting one particular component and buy the rest online from somewhere like Scan (link in my sig)

As for what components to have, what is the PC being used for?

secondly - i'm going to use the computer for general internet usage and ocsional gaming.

as i said it's my first build so i don't want to put lots of money into it.

thanks in advance

If you don't know what overclocking is, don't worry about it for now, it essentially means running a CPu at a faster speed than it's rated for to get extra performance.

As Sammorris stated overclocking is when you push your CPU settings beyond the rated performance. As great as this may sound overclocking can easily break your computer if you don't know what you are doing. Also when you overclock your computer generates a lot more heat so without proper cooling your computer may also overheat.

Anyways for £400 you can actually get a pretty high end computer. Correct me if am I wrong but I believe £400 is around 800 USD? For the CPU I would probably suggest
