Re-Code into MPEG2??

When a DVD does not fit on to a DVD-R one of the options available to us is to re-encode into MPEG2 (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/5540). Is MPEG2 like VCD or SVCD or will it play on a standard DVD player. When you encode in DVD shrinker what does it put it in then??

DVDs are already in MPEG-2 format. The purpose of re-encoding is simply to lower the bitrate so the files are small enough to fit on a blank DVD. There are also other options available that didn't exist when that FAQ was written. A program like DVD Shrink can remove unwanted audio and subtitles, re-author the disk to remove menus and extras, and compress the movie without re-encoding. Compressing isn't technically as good as re-encoding since it just removes information, but depending on the quality of your TV and, more importantly, what looks good to you, it may be a better way to go since it's less time consuming and the learning curve isn't as steep.
