Got a Dell pc with an NEC 1100A drive, never realised there were DVD-R & DVD+R discs..... mine will only burn to +R discs but I have 50 -R discs..... is there some way of changing the software or a crack to make the drive burn to both???

No, i've got the same burner, it's +r only. Take/send the blank -r's back, swap 'em for +r media.

Damn, I got the discs at trade price, really cheap, rang the company today and they don't sell the +R versions! I'm not up to date on +R vs -R discs but there's defo nothing U can do then to upgrade the drive?

I'm in UK, usually go to computer fairs on weekends, been getting Datawrite +r 2.4x for £15 for 25. Cheap as chips, work fine with my burner/ standalone dvd player/ PS2.

Another thing the NEC 1100A will not do is to read Memorex black CD-R discs. The one on my new Dell Precision 360 will not even recognize there is a disk in the drive.
I can always use the old drives on my 6-year-old machines; you would think newer drives would be more sensitive rather than less.

Yeah, mine wouldn't read the black Datasafe cd-r's, strange, cos my Plextor cd writer reads 'em no bother !

I'm not sure if this will make your media work, but, I did find a firmware update on the dell website. I have the same drive and experienced the media not working, in my case I bought Memorex DVD-RW 1X-2X Here's the info that you need to find it on the dell website:
NEC ND-1100A 4X DVD+R/2.4X DVD+RW, v.10GE, A04
File Date: 4/25/2003
This is a firmware update for the NEC ND-1100A 4X DVD+RW drive. This update application will update the firmware on the drive to version '10GE'.

There is a firmware from EDNA that convert 1100A to a 1300A ... whola, you can write -R and -RW discs - but only on 2x.
I've tested this on a friends Fujitsu-Siemens computer with OEM NEC..
This is as good as nec is..not so good
You can go back to the original firmware for your drive. Nec supports downgrading firmware.

In fact there is an upgrade. But not from Dell. The nec 1100a is like 95 % a nec 1300. Several owners have flashed their burner with the firmware n11_109bin. Be careful because you will loose the support of Dell.
If you are interested i advise you to read and learn as much as you from the following links before you take any action.
http://66.199.181.68/ this is herrie's place with it's own forum
http://etna.rpc1.org/ Etna's DVD Info Pages
http://home.deds.nl/~nec1100a_upgrade/ this page describes you wath to do ( but it's in Dutch)
If you don't understand it mail to me i will make a translation
I have a nec 1100a from dell as wel.

Chapter 2
I have just downloaded the original firmware and uploaded the new firmware n11_109.bin using:
bootdisk winme on disk 1
nec1100a.exe + n11.109.bin on disk 2
I have booted up with the bootdisk; changed the disks
first command nec1100a -sec -sla -out original.bin to outread and save the original bin
second command nec1100a - sec -sla -flash n11_109.bin
After this the original firmware has been erased and new firmware will be burned. It ends with the message completed.
I restarted windows and it recognises nec 1300a.
Hopefully it wil act as one.

I have the same NEC drive (1100A) and copied an mpeg file to a DVD+R disc. I also finalized it using Sonic DLA.
Anyone know why I can't view it on my home DVD players?? One is a Toshiba and the other is GE.
Appreciate any help.

I to suffered with this problem. After mistakingly buying DVD-R disks, I was annoyed that I could burn them on my ND-1100A drive. The NEC site quoted they were not going to provide any firmare updates.
However, thanks to Jan282 (13th Feb), I uploaded the firmware to change the drive to a ND-1300a. It works better than ever, and I have no problems with using DVD-R......thanks!.

If you want to flash it to a nec 1300 you can use the ones i used.
It wil outread the original first. So you can flash it back if you want.

My current firmware isn't 1a, it is 10fd. I didn't see a firmware update for that. I just don't want to screw my drive up.
