would it be better to just use a 25ft dvi male to female cable and run it from dvi out into the dvi to vga adapter and use the short cga cable im using now? does dvi lose quailty over long distance?

IF you had a long dvi cable that you could use then using that with an adapter would be a good choice. But the price for a dvi cable is a lot more than for a vga cable. you should not notice any difference between the vga and the dvi. as for the ebay item. if you can find it that cheap it might be a good idea to try it out, and if it isn't good then you are out only a few dollars.

HD15 vga & HDDB15 vga are the same thing as they both use a db15 connector that has 3 rows of 5 pins/sockets for male/female.

you'll want a shielded cable for that distance.

either use a cable that has the tin foil wrap plus bare ground wire under the main insulation or the braided shielding plus bare ground wire under the insulation. the bare ground wire is soldered to the metal part of the db15 connector on both ends.

that 1 should be alright. the 1 problem i have with it is the ferrite rings close to the connectors in that the wire between the ferrite ring & connector can break if bent to often. i had to fix a few monitors because of that problem.

I'm pretty sure VGA is far more tolerant of distance, so stick with VGA if you can bear the fuzz. The high bandwidth cables for my monitor are limited to only 6ft I think. As for the network cable, get CAT5E or CAT6, not CAT5.

I'm pretty certain CAT5 is limited to 100Mbit, if you send large amounts of data over the network, it'll be very slow. CAT5E should be compatible with everything in the last decade or so, and offers Gigabit speeds.

As for fuzz, hook up a monitor with DVI and then VGA to the same PC, you'll soon see what I mean. DVI offers a much better image even with the shortest of cables.

I don't know about HDMI - but using a high quality monitor, the Dell Ultrasharp 2407FPW, the difference was night and day, anyone else I know with a decent LCD who has done it notices what a vast improvement DVI is using even a cheap cable.
