Hey folks, this is baffling the crap outta me. I've switched to backing up my DVDs to Dual Layer discs for a while now without any problems using Arita Printable RiTek DL DVD+R discs and burning with Nero after decrypting with FabDVD Decrypter.

Then I've come across the craziest problem when backing up 24 Season 2 box set. I've so far done discs one and two and the audio on the last episode on each disc is just not there yet the original is fine. I've tried burning again, exact same problem across several DVD players.

I decrypt the full DVD and burn the full DVD, no compression etc. It's baffling me and I'd love to get some feedback on this, any ideas, similar problems?

Thanks for the feedback, I'll try burning with imgburn, does it support burning Video_TS files? I've used imgburn before for images etc. Thing is, I've used Nero since I was a kid and it's been the most reliable, stable burning software for VideoDVDs I've ever used, so I'm doubtful it's an issue with that... it's crazy tho!

what I would do is burn to your hard drive first and then play the DVD files on the computer with your viewing software, like PowerDVD or Classic DVD Player. See if you get sound by playing the files on your computer! If so then something is happening in the burn.

Also did you check to hit the remote/player switch audio channel button while playing your DL disk? Sometimes the disk will switch the main audio channel to a different one and you won't get the right audio channel! by hitting the button to switch audio channel on your remote or your player might just correct your problem.

Yeah will try playing the files in PowerDVD to see if the episodes have sound. Also checked the audio track options when playing the DVD and no joy there either :(

The recommended way to do dual layer is Verbatims and Imgburn.

Arita should be ok for video.. I haven't had many troubles with them. Something is going wrong with the process, wasting pricey disks won't help until that original problem is solved ;) Copying image to hdd first, and then checking it before burning seems like the best way to find out at which point the process is going astray.
Could the layer break be happening in a strange place breaking the audio?.. it's unusual, more likely something with the transcoding run is wrong. Nero isn't very good at D/L burning.

Imgburn will burn video_ts folder just fine.. remember to add an empty audio_ts folder to the disk also.. some players need it..
Run imgburn first in "build" mode which will make an iso and allow you to pick a suitable layer break. (nobody remembered to let you know that ;) Too quick to go on about expensive media.. cheapies are fine for testing and giving to friends.. I only use expensive disks for valuable backups)

This isn't the first time I have heard of this problem with 24, but I don't remember where it was I came across it. I think Ihoe was involved with that solution but... my memory isn't so good these days.

Hi :)
RITEK's own brand with their best media is
RITEK...RIDATA and TRAXDATA
as "1bonehead" has said
beware...ARITA is not their own brand name and only buy Ritek "B" grade media...works most of the time on single layer
if you use Ritek (as i do)for D/L you must use their own brand name ie. RITEK...RIDATA or TRAXDATA

Thanks for the feedback folks, yeah I love RiTek discs and for single layer I've used original RiTek G05 dye discs since I found them, most reliable ever!

Thing is, I've got an inkjet CD printer and love keeping all my stuff nicely printed and tidy so I need a white printable surface disc and the Arita branded RiTek D/L printables were the only ones I could find.

If anyone can link me to some good quality RiTek D/L printables, please do!

I've had 99% satisfaction with these discs and burning with Nero with my Pioneer DVD-RW drive.

I need to check the original video_ts files on my hard drive to see if there's an encoding issue, gotta get my 24 season back off me dad!

This has never happened on any backup ever, it's baffling!

Episodic disks can sometimes be the most difficult to backup because of structure and the total number of frames. If the video content is being backed up ok (Picture quality) but your audio content is not then it is very unlikely that it is a problem with burning software or media. This suggests that the file has problems in it's ripped state or structure.

Have you tried ripping with AnyDVD's built in ripper? Try that and then play it back before burning it. To play it back download a copy of Mark's DVD Tray player professional. It emulates standalone player playback. Most software DVD players will play a DVD even when its structure is damaged.

A distorted audio stream can still be heard, just distorted.

Newegg has some Ridata hub-printable +R D/Ls here. 25 ct tub @ $29.99 w/free shipping. Just ordered some myself to try out.

Haven't encountered your problem myself but think I read it here also but don't remember particulars.

I also use ImgBurn for all my D/L burns but I don't do the "build" step that varnull recommends. I choose the ripped dvd and ImgBurn asks me to select the layer break before burning.

Does performing the "build" step improve your burns?

I was having A very similar Problem with My burned DL Dvd's in recent months. I even got so frustrated with burning that I stopped doing it for a long time. The problem was that Absolutely everything would work great when the DVD was on the HDD before Burning but every time I would burn with Nero, I would get errors that would evidently creep in during the Burning process. But since I thought Nero was the best software, I was at a loss. The errors were things like certain audio tracks would not work, and during using interactive subtitles, I would get jumped to a different part of the disc, etc. After burning, I would check the disc with VOB blanker, and It would say something like this:

And That was, like I said, from the Burned Disc which Did NOT give that error before burning. Then Today I came across this topic, downloaded ImgBurn, And was blown away when the error stopped. This program, which is strikingly similar to DVD Decrypter, Solved all my DVD burning issues, and has brought me happiness again. So anyone who is burning DL's - Use ImgBurn. It may solve your problem.

I found that some time ago too and hence 7.0 Nero was my last upgrade. I use imgburn for numerous tasks and it runs almost flawlessly on ever tasks. It was good of you to mention your experiences with burning here because someone who needs this info just might find it.
