Hey I got this quick question, I built a new pc about 3 months ago, and have been using wireless internet using a usb dongle, but now I'm looking to use a PCI version, but my problem is that it wont recognize it, I plug it in and it lights up in back, but not detected. I thought maybe it's the card but have tried three different ones, and a usb card in another slot, is there a chance that they are disabled ? how to fix this would be kewl. THX

have you tried installing the drivers?
go check in control panel, then go to network connections. then check if you have disabled any of them.

Yup, sounds like you haven't installed the drivers for the card yet.

when i go there all that is shown is the wired on ei have on board and the wireless usb version i have now

have you tried all the pci slots? is the card seated all the way into the slot?

yes it's seated fully in there.... all pci slots were tested and tried

Ok, but what happens when you go into device manager and look through there? Any yellow bangs? Can you not load the drivers for the card?

Yaeh goody.. that's the one.. try running the cd that came with the card. That's what they are for. If for some reason you haven't got the disk then google the device by model number (you must have that on the packaging maybe).. or look at the biggest chip on the board and make an educated guess. XP doesn't have drivers for new hardware.. it is old and outmoded, but the makers usually include some sort of driver for windows based systems.. to forget to do so would be stupid.
If all that fails.. you identify the device and install the driver.. then it is time to get crafty by running a live linux cd and using the lspci command to 100% identify the hardware.

i run the cd and it installs the programs for both the wireless and usb cards but neither of them are able to work because the hardware isnt found for either of them

Sounds like the driver isn't being installed. Go look at the network cards website and download the driver for that device. INSTALL MANUALLY!

clear the cmos tho will have to reset the time & date to correct & try a pci card in all the slots.

Do try that, if that fails and you want to 100% confirm whether its a hardware problem or a driver / OS problem do this:

Make sure the card in question is plugged in.
Copy & paste this into your browser:
ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/damnsmall/current/dsl-4.4.3.iso
Download / burn to cd.
Launch the CD.
Run Terminal, enter "sudo lspci".
Post the details and we can 100% confirm whether it's a problem with the card / motherboard or windows not recognising it.
