So what could i get for around maximum £400 -keyboard, mouse, monitor, and speakers. The computer will be used for home use and occasional gaming.

I found a great place to start. This weeks "DEALS" (note the rebate) has a great "Barebones " kit as a base PC. You will need to inquire on the shipping policy and research for a VGA, mouse, keyboard, speaker, and monitor. I am also hoping you have Software (OS) for your application. This should get you close, however, your requests will force you to spend a bit more than your budget is implying. Remember, in this business, you get what you pay for! If this is truly out of your budget, sign up for the weekly newsletter and watch for the many deals they have to offer till you find what fits your needs.

jet, you didn't even mention the store that applied to, so even if Plextor was from the US, we'd have no idea where to look.

For the £400 this excludes monitor, keyboard or mouse etc...
MSI Motherboard (dont know which one, one that can hold up to 8gb ram or is their a motherboard that can hold more, hold ths new graphics card slot PCI i think not agp)
AMD X2 Processor
ATI GRaphics card something from the radeon X series
Dont know what Cpu/heatsik & fan (something cheap)
sound Card (Not sure)
Any 200gb Hard Drive
Plextor dvd r/rw Plextor dvd rom drive (a model i can afford)
Ram- Kingston
Modem (optional)
USB
This is the specification i would like.
4-5mhz processor

I will most likely not be able to get this for £400, but need to find a package deal (just the pc/tower) which has similiar specs mentioned.

Seems reasonable.
Couldn't you fit a Gigabyte board and a Pentium Dual core into that budget? You would know how well they OC...

Im assuming no OCing will be done. If there was....maybe, BUT an E2180/E2200 at 3GHz would need extra cooling, which would be over budget, AND he wont ntoice the difference between a non clocked X2 and an OCed E2180/E2200 at 3GHz, and it would be less hassle.
also i went for the cheapest 780G baord i could find, which wierdly was the ASUS. if the GB was cheaper i would haev gone for it. i do nto discriminate :D (unless its an argument HAHA)

Knowing what I know about cheap Asus boards, I vote the intel build solely on that build - but since he doesn't need the monitor etc. included in that budget, the AMD is out anyway.

Shaffaaf posted two builds, one an AMD, and one an Intel. However, the AMD build was built to the price of £400 including the monitor etc. Since you don't need those included in the budget, you can get something better.
