i have a dell T3400 workstation running windows xp pro and i want to swap out my E4600 dual core for a Q6600 quad core. I know the hardware will be compatible but my question is will i need to reinstall windows xp once i swap out the cpu. has anyone one done this sucessfully or will i need to do a fresh install?

You wont need to re-install Windows.

Quad cores get hot, make sure you have adequate cooling.

thanks for the reply and im glad to hear that. as for the heating issue since i was a fool and bought a dell instead of building my own system i will be running the Q6600 at stock speeds and the standard cooling should be fine.

Should work fine, I checked the Dell site and seemingly the T3400 does support quad cores.

It should boot fine, it's if you change your motherboard you need to be concerned, not the CPU.
Oh, and it's the Q6600, not Q4600. :)

I'm not expecting any issues, but if you do encounter them, just post here again.
