Just noticed that Windows Media PLayer will not play DVD's. It will play avi files i've downloaded. It was all working fine a while ago i'm sure. Tried a system restore but no luck yet

Am i missing a codec or something do you think? I remember having this prob when i wiped pc earlier in the year but have a feeling I had to download chipset or something (whatever that is!...not that technically minded when comes to pcs)

Some dvd's it'l show a scrambled picture with sound, others just a blank screen with sound. I'm running XP & have a dell dimension 5100. Also running it on WMPlayer v11

Wmp in XP will play DVD, but only with a third party codec package installed.
Download DecCheck and see if it detects anything.

Thanks, i've downloaded that & it says that I have Intervideo version 5.1.5.5. and also GPL MPEG - 1/2 Decoder version 0.1.2.0 (it has a red cross by that one & the intervideo has a green tick)

WMP since me trying yesterday to install drivers etc for ATI again now wont even play sound on a DVD (avi's still all ok). It will just now say "Windows Media Player cannot play the video because there is a problem with your video card."

I always like installing k-lite codec pack http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_..._codec_pack.cfm
It takes care of all audio/ video issues for windows.
If you dont like WMP use VLC http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_...vlc.cfm/v0_8_6i
guaranteed to work on any file!

thanks, i have already tried that codec pack, still no luck altho now i do have the video playback & sound running behind the error message about the video card!! i'll close the error msg & then playback stops! getting very annoyed now!! LOL

I have VLC on pc & it works altho I HAD preferred to watch things on WMP. Think I'll have to resort to VLC for now though! Any more ideas very welcome!!

Try the Filmerit program. It can detect and repair trouble with the
directshow filters.

VLC Media Player

or

WMP with:
FFDShow + AC3 Filter
And VobSub for subtitles if you don't like the subtitle support that ffdshow have.

EDIT: and its good idea to uninstall all codec packs and other codecs if you are having problems with vids...

thanks for all the advise....

I found a CD-rom with Cyberlink PowerDVD that I used to have on pc but never used, so I re-installed that and decided I'd just have to use that for time being. However when I put my 2nd DVD in that I wanted to watch it opened up Windows Media Player & just started playing as if had no problems whatsoever!! Could it have been something that was linked to PowerDVD program maybe?
