Converting to smaller file size yet keeping quality?

Total newb to the ripping things and could use some help. I am trying to rip my DVD library for back up copies and to put them on my ps3's HDD.

I am using DVDFab to rip them and don't have any problems there, they burn fine to DVD-R media. I then use VOB2MPG to convert the file for transfer to my ps3, but the file size is huge (stop-loss was about 4.5GB).

I guess my main question is can I convert the file to a different file type that will give me the same quality yet cut that file size roughly in half? I'm assuming DVDShrink will do that from the little i've read about it, but not sure.

Quality is a play off between file size and picture quality.. you can compress using a different codec divx rm etc, but your system needs to be able to play the resulting file.. Another way is to reduce the number of pixels (half-D1 352x576) which is what a lot of dvd recorders do to cram 6 hours on a dvd.

End of the story.. high quality means huge files.
