I had utorrent 1.6 and it was getting real slow , so i uninstalled and tried halite , but could not even get it to start any torrent, so uninstalled that. now i have installed the lateest utorrent 1.8 and the downloads are realy fast compared to what i was getting. What i need to know is what everyone else thinks about 1.8. I use peerguardian with it. And is there an update to the utorrent guide, as the one here is for 1.6 and the screen shots do not match the new 1.8 Does anyone here have sugestions to keep me safe.? Thank You

Long time advocate of utorrent but, personally, don't know what to think of any version the last while, they were all doing some pretty odd thing's and I had to switch client's. All I'll say is if a ratio is important to you, keep an eye on your upload stat's on any site before you close it, also your peer connections; mine were terrible and it was killing my ratio on every site I use, definitely not an ISP issue or specific to utorrent 1.8. And these Security risk warnings are getting louder, not going away. At least one private site bans any version after 1.6.

@ mistycat

Thanks for the reply. I do like fast dowloads , like everyone else, but i can handle slow ones if i know its safer. I know nothing is 100 per cent safe. What do you use??
I have heard some bad things about 1.8

Well, I've gone over to Azureus/Vuze and while it's only been a few days, I must say I'm impressed so far. There's been an issue with Safepeer and I may stay with Peerguardian but D/L and U/L couldn't be better. Download speed was never an issue with utorrent but my peer connections died, still some until they completed and then none or only a couple, Vuze shine's here. Tried a few other client's as well but couldn't be happier with Vuze unless I could figure out Safepeer and resource usage is a bit high at 89 MB here but is having no impact at all.

Yeah , the reason i have not tried the frog , is that everyone says it is cpu hungry. But i do have core 2 duel so i guess I'll give it a try, if you like it it must be good.

That's exactly the reason I never tried it but I honestly don't know it's running until I check Task Manager. It is good, another poster here, varnull, has long praised it above utorrent, respectfully, I might add, and it would appear he was right on all front's. I still can't see anyone compromising a program like that, don't know what's going on, maybe just here, but that would be insane. One thing I noticed is that Vuze seemed to be faster and have more connections after a day or so but that was probably the file I was on at the time, anyway give any try a day or so. Thank's but you have to like it, not go by what I think, you may hate it.

Mistycat, what did you mean by

I can't fathom this concept unless the uploading was being hampered possibly by trying to make room for more down loading.

I have never used utorrent so maybe it is how the process specs are being displayed.

Nothing to do with downloading, I only ever download or seed one file at a time. I had three issues and two were insurmountable. When connected to any file, peer connection would stay around 15-20 % where it is 60 - 90 % with Vuze and once they completed, no new ones took their place or only a couple and my uploads stayed around 10 KB. Also, regardless of what site I used and regardless of what my total upload showed in utorrent, updates to my ratio on every site only changed in 30 - 40 KB increments and not at all once utorrent was closed even if I resumed later. On a site like Demonoid that only updates once a day, I could have uploaded 700 KB in utorrent but once I closed it, that 700 MB was gone for good and never registered. The third problem was no big deal, just annoying that it no longer worked when it had. I constantly restore images as a kind of uninstaller and find myself back to previous versions of utorrent. Auto updates no longer functioned at all the last month or so and had to be manually updated. It wasn't a big deal but everything taken together was. It's just nice to see my ratio climbing again and that it was high enough to handle this, I was basically becoming a hit and runner and lucky I didn't get banned.

New version of Vuze has it's own built in peer blocker.. safepeer plugin if used with previous versions will throw a java handler error.

Solution is to disable it and use the built in function instead with the same blocklist as used by safepeer.

I have found it better to remove all previous versions of azureus with all it's config files before updating to any version 3 of Vuze otherwise whet happens is you get a directory for Vuse with just the plugins in with the old azureus files being updated...

Why does that matter? Because as vuze is now associated with .torrent files it errors as you are still using the azureus path not the new vuze path.. Minor but annoying.

Always use the "advanced" option in the config wizard ;) Remember both tcp and udp ports need to be open in the firewall exceptions.

Play about with encryption settings.. some sites you will find that disallowing unencrypted incoming connections will kill peers connecting when you are just seeding.. that isn't your fault, and it is highly recommended for security reasons to make sure that all connections are encrypted.. If it is a problem raise a topic on the trackers forums FAO admin about the matter. If you are certain the tracker is secure and your isp aren't monitoring every packet you should be safe to allow it, as long as DHT is off and you are only accepting connections from the tracker.
Finally.. a lot of ISP's are now using sandvine technology which will disconnect peers (or you).. you can see them getting blocked with vuze.. they connect, pass no data and exit in a split second. Either sandvined or a p2p spider gathering ip's. If it is your isp doing it you will see your dht button flickering between OK and firewalled. There is a workaround.. http://torrentfreak.com/azureus-bittorre...-plugin-080325/ ALWAYS set up and test on a completely legal torrent!!

Thanks for the info, I'll have to check UDP, I think it's off. Safepeer is throwing out an error that it can't be installed but then is unavailable to try again so it may be but I don't seem to be able to verify that. It can't be because it was previously installed because it never was. Is it correct that the built in IP blocker is doing the same job as Safepeer or PeerGuardian? And where is the DHT option in Vuze, would that be Distributed DB? Thanks again. Edit: UDP was off and I guess that is DHT.

No worries.. the new interface and options are laid out differently.

Yes.. the built in blocker uses exactly the same lists..

I'm looking at the i2p plugin for added security.. will post findings soon as ;)
