I have just bought a Ricoh DVD-R Copier.

The main intention was to "backup" DVD Movies.

I cant seem to just copy the disks. how do i go about doing it.

You cant just copy the discs from one to the other. You have to rip the vob files to your hard drive and then encode them to mpeg2.

Look for all the info you need on www.vcdhelper.com

that's not exactlly true actually you can.
If the disc original is under 4.7, you can just make an image and copy it right back. (playstation 2 "BACKUPS" would fall into that catagory"

If the movie itself is under 4.7 and has extra junk like trailers you can do one of two things when backing movie up to dvd-r
method 1
(1) rip dvd - including title 1 (the menu), what ever the title the movie is, and the header the first two files the IFO and the other one
(2) use ifoedt, to edit the starting sector for the movie in the video IFO (what I just called the header)
(3) burn it to DVD-R

method 2
(1) rip dvd (just the movie to one VOB)
(2) Use "Quick Builder" to make a dvd image from the VOB (you can use the demo version for this) it will make a DVD that will have no menu will just start when you put it in
(3) burn it to DVD-R

for what ever reason ifoedit is not as easy as it seems I haven't had any success with it. I need to learn a bit more about the structure of the dvds, if I find something out I'll be sure to post it. the other way is much simpler (sometimes the times on the movie seem to get messed up).. there is a step by step instruction to that method right here http://www.geocities.com/covert1.geo/dvd-r/dvd_r.htm

it took me like two weeks to find this stuff on the inet, there is a lot of disinformation and a "black magic" attitude towards dvd coping. everyone seems to be under this illution that re-mpging is the only way to go, this is purely stupid you lose quality. What i haven't tried yet is, and what I will try next is in movies over 120s, to get smartripper or decrypter to split the VOB at 4.7 and see if I can burn the tail end of the other vob on a second DVD-R using the same method as 2..
I hate titles

How do you rip to only one vob in quickbuilder?

no you use smartripper or dvddecrypter to rip the dvds, and you either do it with method one or method two (method two you have to check to merge the VOB files together). Quick builder just takes that one VOB and makes a new header files and splits it back to 1 gig chunks as required for DVD video format.

What software did you use to burn to the DVDR? Prassi is complaining for me that it cannot accept 720zx480 video resolution...

Ignore my previous post.

Prassi's software is included with the Pioneer. After you get the appropriately formatted files, you can just burn them in a VIDEO_TS Directory to the DVD.

I was choosing the VCD option which generated the issue with resolution. With the data DVD option (UDF) it works like a champ. Now if I could only get quickbuilder to actually do the chapters correctly, I would be set! I have to leave out any chapters because both PowerDVD and the set-top player hang every time they try to advance to the next chapter.

I got my A03 today :) Yep it comes with Prassi 2.0. I'm so stupid though, my first DVD-R, i used DVDit to burn it. and stupidly chose the video_ts folder. well the stupid program burned the contents of the video_ts folder on the root of the dvd disc!!! so there's no way my set top player would recognize it, neither does power dvd unless i manually tell it to open the IFO file...sheesh...
I went to fry's electronics, and those guys don't even have dvd-rw disks. the bin was empty, and they had one dvd-r disc, and get this, they wanted $69 bucks for it!!! insane! that must have been what they were going for when they first came out.
I have no clue where to get them locally...i'm going to have to look on the web.

Hello all,

I too am struggling with writing a dvd. I have used smart ripper to rip the movie removing the macrovision and the region coding, but then Im stuck(This creates some files which I have read i store in a folder called video_ts). I have seem some stuff on the net saying us Nero and select some sort of image and just drag the image to the CD and burn it I have waisted 2 dvd-r's so far as when i try and play it with power dvd 4.0 it errors but I can play the movie if i manually open the VOB files.

Can someone please tell me what to do know as I am stuck.

Thanks in advance

Morgano :)

For DVD QuickBuilder Full Version!!! check (URL-REMOVED-BY-WEBMASTER)

Q1: Does anyone knows why DVD QuickBuilder does not recognize the correct lenght of a merged VOB file. I think that's because the header is only in the first VOB. Is there any solution because I cannot create the chapters for the movie correctly ??
Q2: The DVD subtitles in the ripped VOB files look different than in the original movie (different font and color) How can I preserve the aspect of this subtitles while ripping or to how can I correct this afterwards ?
Thanks.

if copying dvds you need to used clad dvd to deencode them as they are encripted the use ifoedit to make sure the new dvd data is clean the use prassi to write to disc
of course you need the right media as most dvd players (standalones) do not read dvdr (if they play mp3's theres a good chance they will.
a program called rempeg will also make the movie smaller if it's too big to fit but of course you will lose quality so is it worth it
you can put them onto two dvds and ifo edit will do that for you too
