Hi what should i go for:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2.4GHz, LGA775, quad core $278.10
or
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400, 3.00GHz $258.24
or
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500, 3.16GHz $270.45
~OR~
AMD Phenom X4 9750 quad core 2.4GHz $288.06
or
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+, dual core, AM2 3.2GHz $219.83
i am building a gaming pc and i need a good cpu/i may oc my cpu as well\
i only want to spend $250-$300
if you think you no what cpu is the best please say witch one and why.
if there is another really good CPU please say also.

Q6600 FTW but for 278...wtf? Thats more the price range of the Q9300

Q6600 is a quad core. Quads are finally starting to affect gameplay now, so I'd recommend getting one. They will easily overclock to the speed of the Core 2 Duos, but you have 4 cores, rather than two!

My current E4300 is overclocked from 1.8Ghz to 3.2Ghz. I intend to OC a quad core when I buy one, but not quite so much, perhaps 3.4Ghz ish.

wow what do u use as your cpu fan? or do you water cool your cpu?can u seguest to me a really good cooler that is chaep and will be able to reach 3.2ghz (stable) on a Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2.4GHz, LGA775, quad core...//BTW i dont want to water cool\\

The XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 is a very good cooler; many people i know have hit 3.6GHz using it. Though, beware that you may need to get the retention bracket as well to help keep it in place. The only other cooler i can really think of at the moment is the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. Most people get to about 3.2 with that. Combine with some thermal paste you should be good.
One thing to really note though, make sure its a G0 stepping and not a B3 stepping; basically youll be able to OC better with a G0.

G0 stepping is a revision of the processor; basically it uses less power and runs cooler which in turn allows for a higher overclock.

On the XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 you WILL need a retention bracket. And the heat pipes are weird, some people never figure them out.
Save yourself the headache and get your self a Tuniq Tower. Oh and if someone tells you a Q6600 is a SLACR then it means it's the G0 stepping.

I wouldn't realy no the if there is any think better then a q6600 because i had a p4 b4 a 3.4 ghz, so went from one core to four!!!. I love this chip, i have a water cooled system and at the momement i have it running from 2.4 ghz to 3.06. I know i can push it alot higher then that but i dont see the point in this moment of time because the game i play now run fast enough for my liking.But again a good chip if you want to overclock.

Hehe, I'm running mine at 3.24Ghz and there's not even a fan on my heatsink... :P I've had no trouble getting this CPU to the same sort of clock as my dual core, and presumably due to all that extra cache, it's quite a bit faster at that setting.

Omg lol.. how on earth did you manage that!!! surely your tempatures are high though? how come you have no fan on your heatsink ? shows you though how good this cpu actually is!

Not really how good the CPU is, but how good the cooler is. I use a Thermalright Ultra-120A, and I do ensure I have decent case ventilation. See my specs blog page for more details.

Beg my pardon lol.. i think i misunderstood what you said about your cooler.. i was like what NO fan??? I was thinking omg haha that cpu doesn't need cooling? haha. Thermalright Ultra-120A just googled it, thats a funny looking thing? How does it work? Have you ever thought about joining the watercooling club?

Same as any other heatpipe cooler, heated vapour through the heatpipes carries the heat better from the copper base to the large metal fins, where it dissipates. My housemate uses watercooling, and he's had so many problems with it, I decided not to go with it. Besides, I use one of the hottest running CPUs out there, and have THE hottest running GPU out there, and they don't overheat, so I see little reason to go for watercooling other than for big time overclocks, which I'm not looking for at the moment anyway.

Well, it involves tubes and fluid, that's where the similarities end. There are no open access points, the fluid is gaseous, there's no pump or reservoir...

guys think its worth swithing out my Zalman cooler for a Thermalright Ultra-120 ? my temps seen fine at 34C CPU and system temps running at 32C
