So I got a new DVD player a couple months ago (specifically Philips model DVP5982) and I'm wondering specifically what codecs it supports. The user's guide says what containers it supports, but I know I burned an mp4 and it wouldn't play for some reason or another. I'm wondering if someone can direct me to somewhere where I can find the codecs that a particular player supports, especially this player, but hopefully somewhere that has information on other players because I also have a DVD recorder I'm kind of wondering the same thing about. I don't have that one's model number with me at the moment, and generally I watch discs on the DVP5982, but if there's a good source for this info out there somewhere, could someone direct me to it? Thanks in advance. (btw the player *does* have USB input, though I don't think that really matters for my particular question)

A typical mp4 file might have H.264 video and AAC audio - I doubt your player supports these types.
I would think the users manual should spell out what is playable.
Normally, standalone players support AVI files;XviD or DivX video with mp3 or ac3 audio .

Has helpful information (check the main page, left side under 'Lists') on DVD players and recorders.

ya i don't see that i can check which audio codecs it supports, though. I probably should have been more specific about what I wanted on my last post. For that, I'm sorry. Seems kind of useless to me to support the MP4 container if it doesn't support any codecs that are reserved for it; I guess it's for iPods? No matter the error I got on that MP4 I burned was Video Codec Not Supported, so it may be worth a try to test and see if it plays AAC audio. I'm not sure it will, I just can't see Philips adding the container compatibility solely for owners of iPods, when there are plenty of other similar devices which support different filetypes. Thanks again for your help :)
