Anyone got any thoughts on this? I'm doing backups on to Bulkpaq Orange disks. They're not my favourites but they're cheap and fairly reliable. Some of the finished disks are fine but about half have a problem. They'll play fine in a standalone but if I try to play them in PowerDVD on a PC I get "A disk with an unsupported format in Drive E:" They can't be read in Explorer, DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink either. They're simply not read, but no error message displays. If they didn't work at all it would make more sense but as I say they work fine on the standalone. I thought it might be a fussy DVD Rom drive but I've tried then in another drive with the same result. Can anyone help?

You cannot re-backup a backed-up disc (if you see my point) so no point in re-using DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter with the disc you have jus burnt. Bulqpak are notoriously poor discs. If you don't want any problems just switch to Ritek especially as they are only a notch higher in price.

Thanks for that. I'm a bit confused as I've often "backed up back ups". Must be the bulkpaqs.

To make a second backup just upload the files straight to HD and burn again or use 'on the fly' copy option.

I've maybe been a bit obscure. What's confusing me is the fact that the disks play ok in a standalone, so that presumably means that the basic file structure of the disk is ok. But then my PC won't even recognise them as a valid disk. I had lots of occasions when a disk worked fine on the PC but not on a standalone, but never the other way around. I'm assuming these disks are unrescuable as I can't read them on the pc, but if anyone's got anything I could try as a last resort I'd appreciate it.

It's not that unusual for discs not to be recognised by your DVD-ROM drive. Someone I know bought a cake box of DVD-R from Maplins in UK and they refused to be read by both his DVD PC drives with the message 'illegal disc' coming up. They did, however play and record fine on his standalone DVD player/recorder. The discs did not even have a recognisable brand name when checked with DVD Info - only a set of numbers which may have been the code for a particular disc. Anyway the moral of the story is find a brand that works for you and just stick to it!
