Ripping DVDs: Am I missing something?

Hi,

I have a lot of old DVDs I need to rip and turn into something like avi or mkv. I have read the great guides in this forum and looked at software, both commercial and free, which can get the job done. Some of the "all-in-one" programs which rips and converts to avi just didn't work right (sound out of sync, crashes), so I gave up on that. I do not want to pay for something that does not work.

There's one program I go know very well, it's VirtualDub and VirtualDubMod. So I ended up wanting to find a way I could use that for most of the job. What I did was just copy the vobs off the DVD (not copy-protected, so I do not need software for this part of the job). Then I merged the vobs with VOBMerge (http://evilmaster.net/index.php?page=tools). I loaded the new merged vob into VirtualDubMod and used my favorite encoder to create mkvs from the DVDs.

Since I am not an expert I would like to ask if I am missing something doing it this way? The quality of the result looks good to me, but I know very little about mpeg2 and DVDs so I would like to ask the experts here. I will have to do a lot of this and do not want to waste time by having to do it twice finding out that if I had done it differently the results would be much better.
