1GB is ok for the XP Pro, but 2GB would be better. Vista 32 & 64 bit are suitable for the garbage can, and that is about it.
If you are set on going to Vista, go with the 32 bit, and for sure, have 2GB of RAM, minimum, in your computer.

Yeah, I wouldn't install Vista on your setup either unless you upgrade to 2GB. Stick with XP Pro as it will be tons faster.

I have an old machine with this CPU and 1GB ram. I very much doubt Vista will work acceptably on this CPU (even with 2GB of ram), XP Pro is indeed fine on there (even though i now use mine as a Linux box to get even more performance out of it).
p.s. the 2800 is not a 64 bit CPU, unless you meant Athlon 64 2800+ ??

You can only run 64bit if your comp is 64bit there are issues regarding drivers for 64bit which are'nt so prevailent with the 32bit version, the main difference is 64 lets you run more ram over the 3 or is it 4gig boundry plus 64bit is faster,2gig minimum is a must you should've noticed how your xp performs with the extra ram, mainly being able to run more proggys at once & the lag of launching is no longer as bad as it was.
Edit: if that cpu is single core i personally would'nt bother

If you're keen to try something different that won't cost money do as creaky & i have done & install a linux distro, for me it's ubuntu, the performance is unbelievable, pisses me off that xp ain't as fast, considering how many apps are inside linux.
As for vista if & when you decide to get a copy be sure to compare the releases,i think for comparison vista ultimate would be xp pro & so has a few more bells & whistles

Does the system recognse that there's now 1GB of ram in there ?. Also, try reseating the ram, nothing to lose there. Finally, try putting the old memory back in as a test, ie to see if it's stable. Then put the new memory back in. If it's still unstable maybe 1 or both sticks of the memory is not quite compatible or is faulty. The best way to prove if it's faulty is to run memtest86 - http://www.memtest.org/

Yeah, make yourself a bootable CD of it, it runs outside any operating system.
Oh, and I too echo the thoughts about Vista. A sempron 3600+ mobile chip with 1GB is completely useless in vista, it takes several minutes to do anything.

Faulty memory by the sound of it. Test each combination individually, and with luck a certain stick or set will come out as the culprit - replace it.

Sure, but even new memory sticks can be faulty. Hopefully it's just the one so you might be able to use the other while the other is being replaced

Indeed, and Crucial, while a relatively good manufacturer, do experience that a little more often than another rival brand, from what I've read.

I'm going to state the obvious and suggest swapping the sticks around :)
..but obviously you should experiment so as to try to pinpoint the problem further..

You'll have to wait for others to confirm what i say but from where i'm sitting you'll loose the ability to boot to prof if you delete home, the only way i can think of perhaps being successfull (& it's a really long shot) is using partition magic from inside prof & deleting home then use the slider to bring xp homes partition space into prof's,the problem here is these changes require a reboot to take affect but since you've deleted home the boot record will be destroyed, the only way you may recover it is by using the prof disk to rewrite it when using the repair console,in the long run you'd be better off just doing a destructive reformat & start from scratch unless you want to have a play & see what happens..lol..
EDIT: It would'nt be an issue if prof was installed before home was

Whenever I reinstall windows, I wipe the disc clean first with a reformat (yeah yeah, it's not a true wipe, but it suffices) and then stick whatever OS I like on it. Downside of this is all the data goes, so you need to back everything up...
