this happens whenever i try to burn anything. i thought it was my drive, and i grabbed an extra one from friend and im getting this same error. any suggestions? I downloaded new firmware but its a flaky bit of software and i dont think its a good idea.

You've got some good news and some bad news comin'.
For starters the brand of disc (media) your using is CMC mag.....oh dear. Get Verbatim or at worst TDK's (generally speaking).
Second is the burn speed. Even with your current "stocks" of CMC, burn at least half the rated speed. According to the log info it was at 48X so try the same project again at let's say...16X. This should make an improvement.
Thirdly, it's been my and many others experience that NERO 8 seemes to be a little "buggy". I had a slightly earlier version than yours and it was so unpredictable, i had no choice but to uninstall and revert back to my original NERO version 6. As it happens, nero 6 wasn't the best ever either, but it worked flawlessly on even crappy media....like TDK's....LOL.
Almost last but not least, don't do anything at all on your machine while encoding or burning etc. System resources can be strained at times and so produce irratic results.
Still waiting for the good news i suppose? Well your memory that's in use is reaching the dizzying heights of 35%. The capacity available with regard of whats in use is actually very good. At least you don't have to upgrade.... :)

Interesting error.. looks like something wrong with the aspi driver or a bus problem.
I would take a good look at the cables and the ram.

thats what i get when i turned the speed down to 16x
ive gotten this error with different kinds of cds/dvds
id reformat but i dont know if that would help at all...
