I like to make compilation CDs mixing tracks from various titles in WAV format. What is the best (and preferably FREE) software out there that you can recommend that I use to normalize all the tracks? I use Nero but the resulting distortion on some of the tracks is distracting.

Thanks in advance for your help!

As advised, I downloaded Audacity and fumbled with it for nearly an hour and still cannot make the freeware functional. Is there a tutorial somewhere as I am pretty clumsy when the software is not highly intuitive. Thank you for your time.

I have an idea what RTFM means but what the heck does FOSS stand for?
