You didn't say what format you were converting to or what hardware you're using.
I am going to assume its vcd on a normal cdr drive.
Rip your movie with smartripper. Choose the files option. The movie will automatically be detected.
It will either be a set of file in the format vts_01_1.vob or vts_02_1.vob (region 1 or region 2).
Select the two files over your movie (either vts_01_0.vob, vts_01_0.ifo or vts_02_0.vob, vts_02_0.ifo).
the ifo is the menu + dvd specification and the vob is the menu. Last time I checked you need the menu for this.
Download or open FlaskMpeg. Click File, Open DVD. Now select the ifo file that you save.
You will now have to select your audio stream. Selct the english stream (usually 0x80).
You will also see subtitles (if there's any on the dvd). Pick the language you want and click flask it.
Click options, selct output format should be on bbmpeg encoder. Click options again and Global Project Options.
If you live in Europe make your movie 352x288 but if you live in America 352x240 (pal or ntsc).
For europe use 25 frames per second and for america 29.97 frames per second. Select IEEE-1180 reference quality iDCT (slowest) as your iDCT option.
Click the audio tab. Select decode audio and make sure same as input is NOT selected. Select 44100 Hz.
Click Post Processing Tab. Select HQ Bicubic Filtering in your resizing option. Make sure keep aspect ratio is selected.
Click the files tab. Select the output for your movie.
Click the general tab. Make sure, compile whole files is NOT selcted. Now click seconds and enter the length of your movie in seconds. Simply mutply minutes by 60 and add any extra seconds.
Now click ok.
Click Run, Start Conversion. Before you press start, click settings.
Click video stream settings. Select you output to VideoCd.
Click Audio Stream Settings. Select Layer 2. Your bit rate should be 224 kbits per second. Now click ok and click start.
The encoding process will take a very long time to complete but your movie will be high quality.
When your finished. Check the size of your movie file. It will be over 800mb usually. 800mb will fit on an 80 minute cd-r disk. You now have to split your movie.
Download or open tmpgenc. http://www.tmpgenc.net/files/TMPGEnc-2.58.44.152-Free.zip.
Click File, mpeg tools. Click the merge and cut tab. Make sure your type is Mpeg1 video cd. Click add and browse for your movie
Click on the file and select edit. Use the drag bar to get to or before 80 minutes (find an area that a scene ends). Press the } button and press ok.
Now type an output for the movie file and click run. In a few minutes that part will be complete. Click edit again. The bar will be on the area you last finished. click the { button then drag the bar to the end and click ok. Type an output for the file and click run now that part will be done in a few minutes.
Get two cdrs ready.
You will need nero buring rom (can be found at download.com i think).
When you open nero you will get a window that says new compilation. if not then click the close wizard button.
Scroll down to video cd and click new. You will see a file browser. Look for your first movie file that you created with tmpgenc. Drag it to the compilation. Click file, write cd.
Do the same to the second part of your movie.
Thats for vcd. If you need instruction on divx just say so and il see what i can do for ya.

How about converting to AVI file. I'm a visual effects artist, and as such I collect effects in the ebst format possible to learn from. So for example: "Wow that explosion was REALLY cool, how did they do that?" I'll take JUST the explosion and add it to my effects archive. when I want to do an explosion I can frame through the AVI. I also want to be able to edit and experiment with the footage. I would be immensly greatfull if I could figure out how to go from .VOB to .AVI NOT .MPG or DiVX. THANKS!!

I have a program called divx subtitle editor (Ive tried opening vcd movies and they work too.
Today is the first time I tried it. I dont know how you use it but it allows you open a movie and a .txt subtitles document.
So I assume it will allow you save the movie with the subtitles.
I don't know where to download it off the net but you can get it off kazaa.

I tried following the instructions on a least a dozen sites first. They all seemed incomplete or the mentioned applications either crashed or used to be at teh end of a dozen NOW dead links. Also many instructions seamed biased to just copying DVDs.
In the end...after downloading about 12 different applications mentioned in tutorials I ended up figured out my own way that worked for me.
Obstacles:
Nothing AVAILABLE seamed to read VOBs
Vfapi reader wants .d2v(?)
VirtualDub does nothing with VOBs
Hero video crashes
CladBRC does nothing
FlaskMPeg does nothing
VCD Easy does not read VOB
CladDVD crashes in W2k
DVD2AVI wants VOB
So finally I found a ripper that worked, Smart Ripper. Then after playing around with all my downloaded Apps...I found DVD2AVI could take portions or all of my Smart Ripper VOBs and save as just about any AVI format!! :)
