Ever since DVDFAB released their version 5.0.7.2 I've been having problems with the dvds that I burn. And it's been happening with all its versions up to the latest one 5.0.9.0. They are not readable, not by my dvd player, nor my pc. I keep going back to version 5.0.6.0 and that one works great. I'm thinking that it has something to do with their VSO burning engine. Has this been happening to anyone?

I have not had any of the problems you have described while using dvdfab.
You can use another option if you want to. It's a few steps, but works just as well.
Rip with dvdfab.
Run the files thru fixvts.
Use dvd shrink to compress.
You can either burn with the vso engine or use the more reliable imgburn.

thank you for the advice. I just changed to imgburn and that one works perfect. I appreciate the advice. But it makes me wonder why up to version 5.0.6.0 I can use the VSO burning engine and no longer can... I will keep making research.

My routine has been
1) Rip using DeFab Plat with STD compression
2) Clean with FixVTS
3) Shrink
4) Image Burn
Why so many extra steps?
I get a perfect disk every time.

It's a solid method that works. The number of steps doesn't matter. What matters is the absolute quality of the final product.

marandi73, the experts have spoken!
Why use anything that doesn't do the best job? There is no need to try to figure out why something is better than something else. It is always the programmer that built the superior product just did a more competent job. Maybe he was more expert or smarter or maybe just put more effort into the job or was just lucky. It doesn't matter. Persons with much experiance go for overkill. It is way easier to add a few extra steps so that you do not have to play 20 questions to figure out why your disk doesn't play or is skippy. That is the wasted effort.

I have the same issue with all the new versions of dvdfab. The backup discs are not playable in the dvd player. I did not have any problems with dvdfab till 5.0.6... Even the curren version 5.1.... has the same problem... I am not able to play in my dvdplayer. (I have a paid copy of the software not trail version)
Help!

It is hard to believe that they would put crap out but very few persons burn with DeFab. The paid for version does the compression The ripping and the other processs work much faster with smaller files. I know you are agravated because the stupid software does not work right. Concider it a blessing. Your 1 button process was inferior from day 1.

Thanks for the advice, and yes I am frustrated becuase I just wanted a 1 button push process to do everything. Well, I guess I just have to get used to doing the 4 steps you are suggesting.
So, when you shrink with DVD Shrink (after cleaning with fixvts), don't you lose quality in the compression? The reason I was using the split option was not to loose quality. So, once you compress, you can fit in one disk? Many of the newer movies compresses by 50%. Its hard to beleive you will not loose quality.

You always lose quality with lossy compression. What matters is can you tell the difference. I only save the movie. That requires only a 25% loss which I can't tell on a 20" HD TV. At 50% you can start to see a loss on a large normal TV. More than that and it is real noticable. Still I do not find it too anoying. I compress all my long 2 disk movies to fit on one disk. I find 2 disks and keeping track of 2 disks has far more anoying than a tiny bit of resolution. I have kids that don't put anything back.
After you have done a few 100 you will get used to it. I think you will appreciate the added quality that FixVTS provides. Often the copy is less skippy than the original. I have made smooth playing copies from unplayable originals.

I've used dvdfab by itself from time to time. The only thing I don't like, is when I am in the 'customize' section, I have to click on each and every box there is. I have it set for 'english only' on both languages and subtitles. At least I don't have to check off each one for the foreign languages.
