Copy on-the-fly with nero - Re: Speed

I am using Nero 6 to copy on-the-fly, with unencrypted DVD-R. It takes about 25-30 min to do a DVD although my Pio 106 is 4x. Is this because the Asus is locked to reading films at 2x; so i can not burn at 4x because it is only reading at 2x?? If so will it damage the copy because i told nero to burn at 4x??

Burning on-the-fly is never a suggested option IMHO , always chances of having data transfer errors.
I would rather use Nero > Copy Entire Disc (which doesn't use HDD space)
That way you'll be able to burn as fast as the media is capable of , and not on how fast your IDE cable can transfer data from one drive to the other...

yeah its the ide- you should just use Nero to copy without checking off "copy on the fly"

Nero calls it 'Quick Copy' but that means on-the-fly btw Gaz

How can i copy a full DVD to DVD in 15mins?? Without already having it saved on the hard drive??

This thread has definite potential. I'm surprised the "I copy on the fly all the time with perfect results" crowd hasn't been here yet.
I have a decent system, a fast ROM, an 8X burner and absolutely no interest in experimenting with on the fly. Considering that you need to set your burner to 1X or 2X for any chance at a decent burn it defeats the purpose of saving time anyway. Maybe I'm just getting old.

Ha, just wanted to say it, but it's true. Unfortunately, it's also true that if you don't want to screw up a pricey DVD R, you have to lower the burn speed, which stinks if your're in hurry mode. But I only have a 4x, so I'm doing a lot of waiting around anyway.

Well said , my point exactly. Whats the point in having to at least half your burn time...defeats the point of the object !
Quicker to copy entire disc w/out going to HDD but NOT using 'quick-copy' [on-the-fly] ;-)

I think were missing the point a little here. If you refer to my first post at the top of the thread, you will find that i am not looking to stop coaster, what i want is to be able to burn from DVD to DVD in 15 minutes!!! I have had no problem with quality at all. I have a good burner and use the best disks, i have had no problem with the quality of my burning so far.

You are getting a locked read rate (very low one at that) because you obviously do not have the IDE cable to handle it [as told already]

You cannot burn from DVD to DVD-R(+R) in 15 minutes [for the second time].

OK,
Assuming the "unencrypted DVD" is a DVD-5.
If it is a DVD-R that has already been burned, then the read speed from your DVD reader will be slower than for a commercial DVD - the drives are designed that way (normally between half and three-quarter the speed).
Analysing the data you are transferring:
DVD-R 4.7 gig = 4485 Meg
Because you are reading from one and writing to the other, the true amount of data being transferred through the system is doubled
4485 Meg * 2 = 8970 Meg
That amount of data you want to move in 15 minutes
8970 / 15 = 598 meg per minute
or 9.9 meg per second, every second for 900 seconds.
The CPU in your system is responsible for ALL data I/O as well as running Windows, any other services and programs as well as Nero.
So technically, it is possible to do what you want,
with REASONABLE reliability,
IF the following conditions are met:
1 - you have the ABOLUTE MINIMUM services running
2 - you have NO OTHER PROGRAMS APART from Nero running
3 - you leave the computer ALONE during burning (mouse movements and keyboard actions are interrupt driven and take up CPU resources)
4 - you have a late version of ASPI installed PROPERLY
5 - the DVD reader is on its OWN CHANNEL
6 - the DVD writer is on its OWN CHANNEL
7 - ALL DRIVES MUST be DMA enabled
8 - the hard drive that Windows has its Swapfile on has plenty of free space, is not fragmented and is FAST
9 - Nero is set up to use the fastest drive for TEMP/SWAP space
10 - the SOURCE DVD is PERFECTLY clean
11 - the DVD reader can read the source at a MINIMUM speed of GREATER THAN 4 x
12 - there are no outstanding issues with Windows (data transfer problems, driver issues, Device Manager issues, interrupt issues etc.)
That should just about cover it.

wow pcshateme, calm down... all i wanted to know is how i could do it, DrChips, kindly stepped in and offered his expert advice, as always.
Seems like it can be done but it is alot of trouble, since my reader does not support UDMA and only reads at 3x, im a bit buggered really. At least i know now and when i build my new system io can build it around that sort of spec.
