I would like to burn a region 2 dvd to be a region 1.
I have tried the following :
> ripped / copied dvd to my harddrive using dvd shrink 3.1
> I made sure it is set to region free
> Used Nero 6.3 to burn dvd

I tried it a couple of times, I even tried to change the settings with IfoEdit, without any success.
As soon as I put the newly burnt DVD in my Sony DVD player (not PC) it gives me the message that there is a Region conflict with this DVD.

Any ideas ? Of course I also would like to be able to burn a region 1 dvd so it could be played on a region 2 dvd player, for example in germany. I am not too concerned about NTSC to PAL, since newer TV's can display both.

I would appreciate any input and help !!!!

I researched the complete forum...I guess everyone thinks I am not checking the forum first before asking, but I did. A lot of questions are about making your dvd player or drive region free, but this is not what I am looking for. I bought a DVD in Germany - Region code 2, but would like to play it here without changing the firmware of my stand alone dvd player (not pc). I thought I will copy the dvd using DVD Shrink and Nero...I made sure to set it to region free, but my sony dvd player still complains. I also tried to play it in my ps2...I tried 6 DVD's in the meantime...the same message. Any ideas ?

Has your standalone or PS2 successfully played any other burned dvds? Is the problem specific to just the copy of the region 2 disc or all discs that you've burned?

DVD Shrink should be giving you a region-free copy.

I copied various region 1 dvd's before. They all work fine. I used DVD Shrink for those and copied the audio_ts as well as the video_ts to a dvd, not using Nero. I tried the same for this region 2 dvd. It copies it to the Harddrive with no problem, then I tried to copy the video and autio files to a DVD and it did not work, then I tried Nero...also did not work.
I made sure to have the region free box checked.

You might wanna try running DVD43 or AnyDVD. They run in the background and automatically remove region codes and CSS. So when you use DVD Shrink or rip it first and then burn. The end result should be region free.

AMD Athlon 64bit FX-55 - OCed to 3.06Ghz -- Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe nForce4 SLI -- 4GB Dual Channel DDR400
2x 120GB Seagate 10K RPM RAID-0 -- 2x BFG GeForce 6800 Ultra 256MB PCI Express SLI -- Plextor PX-740A & TDK 40x20x52x -- Windows 7 64bit -- Maybe old and outdated but still runs quick lol

Are DVD43 or AnyDVD meant for playing the DVD's on the computer ? From my understanding (haven't used them yet, but heared about them) they let DVD's appear to be region free on your computer.
How exactly should I use the programs...before DVD Shrink ?

Yes they make them region free on your computer, but also your copies. I use DVD43, and just let it run in the background to remove protection. I've never used AnyDVD, I've just heard it basically does the same thing. But I don't understand why DVD Shrink isn't giving you region free copies, cuz it should be.

I have it set up to where DVD43 is running, and then use DVD Decrypter to rip it to my hard-drive. Then burn with Nero 6 Ultra. I also have DVD43 running if I use DVD Shrink. All my copies have come out region free by doing it that way.

To use those programs before DVD Shrink, just install and make sure their running. They should either appear in the tray or in the Windows Task Manager List. They both remove protections right when the disk is inserted. DVD43 is free and I'm pretty sure AnyDVD is too.

i will try it.

you wrote that you have used DVD Shrink before and made region free dvd's. may i ask if you have had a region 2 dvd and converted the region 2 dvd to a region free dvd and then played that new region free dvd in a standalone dvd player for region 1 ?
if someone can confirm that this works, i wonder what i am doing wrong.
or has someone maybe done the following...you live in a region 2 country (germany for example) and i would send you a from DVD Shrink + Nero generated region free dvd, which was originaly a dvd for region 1 ? Does this work without changing the standalone dvd player to be able to play region 1 dvd's if it is a region 2 player ?

did i confuse everyone now...?

If it is region free , then it will definitely work.
Although the issue should really be whether the contents of said back up is going to be PAL R2 , as most region 1 stand alone players are American...
Most new(ish) stand alone (region 1) DVD players sold in the U.S will play NTSC & PAL ... BUT not all TV sets are capable of PAL playback !!

Note: Forget about region wurtis ;-)

ok here is an update.
i brought the dvd with me to work and put it into my dvd drive and it worked. so i wonder if it has to do with my dvd player at home and or my ps 2.

in regards of if i will be able to display PAL, i have my dvd player hooked up to a lcd display which should be able to display, but i will investigate this a little more.

i will also try to play the original dvd (region 2) here at work or on some other dvd player. who knows...maybe it is a sony thing since both dvd players are from that brand.

for example, if i check the region code on the dvd here at work it is basically all greyed out, which i assume says it is region free.

i have the feeling it is a Sony thing !

R2 Land...originaly that's where I am from as well.
I live in the US now...!
My PS2 and my DVD Player are both R1 !
They both play DVD back ups with no problem...but the
backup has to be a backup of an R1 DVD.

This thread should help.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/69644

The easiest way is to use DVD Decrypter's Region Patch Feature in stead of region free.

Note:
Sony products are very format inflexable. Sony sells most of its products to the U.S. and Japan both are NTSC. Sony also having a movie production and video distribution division wants to be sure that DVDs are used only in the country they distibute them in at a price they feel is fair. A $15.00 movie in the U.S. is sold for nearly $40.00 in Japan.
So unless your DVD player and PS2 specify PAL, you'll have to either buy a new disc or convert the old one.

Hope this helps

I've also found DVD Shrink's region 0 setting not 100% reliable. I use this free programme;

http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm

After shrink has done it's stuff, point freedvd at the backup folder. Then burn as usual. Works well.

Hi wurstis,
I think your problem is with the DVD PLAYER not with the softwares. Try to play that region 2 DVD with a Multi-System player (i.e: Daytek, Sungale players made in China, Korea...) which can play both NTSC and PAL-SECAM disks.
I had similar problem with DVD produced in France (region 3 AND PAL-SECAM system). It cannot display the pictures properly when played with Pioneer DVD-434 or Pioneer V630 players, even though the display devices are LCD projectors which are capable of display PAL-SECAM(Sony PX-20 and Epson 5250 projector). Surprisingly cheap DVD players mentioned above can solve this particular case.

Cheers,
vuvan

I did some more research myself and I think to know now what the problem is. It really looks like that it is a player issue, meaning my Sony standalone DVD player can not play, display etc. anything else than NTSC Region 1 DVD's.

As i wrote earlier, I tried the DVD here at work as well as at a friend...and it works at both places.

One thing though is weired...did someone in Region 2 Land try to play a NTSC Region 1 (or region free) DVD on their PS2 ? I would assume now that they are not able to do this...since I was not able to play a PAL on my region 1 PS2 which is a NTSC PS2.

Anyone any experience...?

Thanks for all your input...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most US DVD players will only play NTSC format, whereas most in the UK automatically convert between the two.
