I've tried many different programs (vlc, mpc, powerDVD, Nero 7) and none of them play the dvd properly. Anyone have any suggestions?

You're gonna have to be way more specific, you've mentioned most players but none of the complaints. Pick one that you're most happy with and tell us what goes on during playback etc....the more info you provide the better the answers you'll get.
Cheers.

Agreed. The more specific you can be, the easier it is for the regulars here to figure it out.

okay, I'll try to explain what happens, but I don't know much of anything about playback I don't know if it'll be of much help.
First off, I dumped powerDVD because it was just awful (the worst of the four) so we can ignore it. All of them (vlc, mpc and Nero 7) have an intermittent problem where they will freeze after being paused. vlc and mpc appear to be skipping frames and have lines that appear about every 5-10s that appear to be either a new frame or the old one. Nero 7 doesn't bring up or allow me to get to a title menu sometimes which isn't that big of a deal but is irritating. I know that the above probably doesn't make much sense so let me know if I need to be specific or explain better and I'll give it a shot.
Thanks.

Have you updated the drivers for your video card? Do you have an LCD digitally connected, monitor?

If you haven't already, maybe try installing the K Lite Mega Codec pack.

I'm using a laptop with updated drivers for everything. I'll install the k lite mega codec pack and see what happens when I get my next dvd.

vlc uses it's own codecs. It usually stutters because there are too many other things going on in the background. The other thing to check is DMA=ON for the dvd drive, and bump up the read-ahead.

I installed K light mega codec pack and tested playback with mpc and vlc. The playback was almost perfectly smooth except the image quality appears to have degraded a bit and every now and then it will blur for an instant.
