My son wants to be able to back up or save to a hard drive his ps2 games because his disks keep getting scratched by his siblings. Is is good to go on craigslist to have someone mod for us or is there something we can do easily ourselves. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

If you don't mind buying stuff over the internet, try using this
http://www.mementoteam.com/index.html (It is a special memory card that allows you play backups(on dvdr/cdr) on any PS2 with out opening it( saves your warranty). If you want to play games off a hard drive ( much faster loading times and better compatibility), you must have an original ps2( the ps2 that is the size of bible(came out when the ps2 originally launched)(the new ones do not contain a hard drive connector or slot). You also need to have the network adapter(sold separately) in order to connect the hard drive to the console(contains the connections for the hard drive along with the connections to go on line). You then need to ether install a softmod (hack) on a memory card that allows you to boot up applications stored on it and PlayStation 1 disc to trigger the booting of the application. Or an action replay max(comes with usb stick that allows you to boot up apps off the stick or a swap magic disc( boot disc, find it online). Then download HDLoader(app for the hard drive) and install the hard drive. Then run HDLoader and format the hard drive, once done you will be able to install the games on the hard drive. If you want any other information, Google HDLoader installer or PlayStation 2 Softmod.

Playstation 2-Free McBoot,HDloader 8.0c,Open PS2 Loader 0.7,80gb Maxtor HDD,SMS Media Player,PGen,SNES Station- Installed
GameCube-SDload,SD Card Adapter,BBA Adapter,2 Color Case,GnuboyGX,MPlayer- Installed
