Hi, I hope this is the right forum room for my question.

Here goes:

I have a Teaching Company Video Lecture on DVD that is in multiple VOB files. I would like to convert the entire DVD to an avi format file.

I want to know what is the best software to use to achieve a good quality conversion. The software doesn't not have to be free. I can basically "buy" what anyone recommends as the best programs to use.

Finally, some instructions would be nice. If someone could layout the basics, or point me in the direction of another site that would be able to explain the process. I suppose I could look at the home sites of the recommended software, however, a few pointers would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I had a similar problem and this is how I converted DVD .vob to an editable .wmv file.

I have a customer that gave me video on a DVD and wanted that video made into a photo and video montage show. I looked for a free solution to convert the .vob file to a file I can edit, but found none.

So . . . what I did is capture the video. You will have to have a video card that has the capture function. I think any card with television features will do that. This is equipment I already have. Then I just loaded the DVD in a portable DVD player and started Windows Movie Maker program.
Start the capture process and click through the beginning settings and push play on the player and you will see the video on the computer screen.
Start the capture button and you are off and running. When finished you will have a .wmv file that will edit in most any DVD authoring program.

Actually I was thinking under the misconception that you could not capture a digital file in this way, so hope this helps someone else.

If you do not have a TV enabled video card then that of course will be a cost. In that case, there may be better ways to do this, but it worked perfectly for me.

As long as the dvd isn't encryted, the free fairuse wizard lite can convert the DVD directly from the dvdrom. No need to rip to hard drive.

If encrypted use dvdfabhddecrypter to rip dvd save as an ISO, next use fairuse to convert the ISO to AVI. Make sure you convert to XVID for best compatibility. For best quality use the 2-pass mode, for faster encoding use single pass (lower quality).

Next if you want to edit the AVI, use the free avidemux. It is frame accurate and edit's without losing quality.
