..then maybe for now we should look at burn logs. I know you said in the other post that the media was fine, however in my experience the people who always object to believing the media could be at fault unfortunately always end up eating humble pie :)

Well then, it's a good thing I tested my discs extensively before posting here. I've been using the same brand of discs for several years now and they never let me down. Nero however has given me problems in the past, but not for a long time now. Right now I'm backing up a movie I never had trouble with just to test Nero and see if something has gotten changed.

NOTE: I did recently reformat and reinstall my OS and I'm fully aware this could be part of the problem.

Let's have a relevant logfile then..

From what? I don't have much experience with log files.

P.S. I really appreciate you sitting on here on christmas day and I apologize if my frustration ever sounds like sarcasm. I've just never had this much trouble backing up discs and it infuriates me that companies try to restrict what I do with my property. Thanks again for your help.

No problem, i'm always here on Christmas Day anyways.

I'm also watching tv, burning a few dvd's plus converting a few dvd's to avi using AutoGK, i just like keeping busy

Nero's logfile (if you're using 6.x) is in C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero though i can't remember where 7.x keeps it's logfile, i have no idea where 8.x and 9.x write to...

I'm using version 7 something. And these burns are completing succesfully with no errors (at least none I'm being notified of) And this same version has always burned ISO files without incident about 95% of the time. Occaisionally I've gotten a power calibration error, but not as many since I went into my windows services panel and disabled the IPATI disc service. When I get one now, a system restart solves it every time. I'll look into where Nero 7 keeps log files and get back to you. Thanks.

I'm still waiting for an ISO encoding from Shrink. Then I'll attempt to burn it in my usual way with Nero. If it fails, we'll know Nero is the culprit and we'll go from there. I hope you'll be here for awhile...

Have no fear, i'm a chronic insomniac so will be here, will be playing GTA4 for a while as there's not much on the tv now.

Okay, Nero is not the culprit. I just ran "Reservoir Dogs" through my process and it ripped and burned without a hint of a hitch. Whatever the new copy-protection the corporate A-holes have come up with is, it doesn't rear its ugly head until the actual burn of the ISO file. So I'm totally out of ideas and patience at this point, I await any help I can get. Thanks.

I can't comment on AnyDVD as i only used the free trial a few years ago, but whenever you tried DVDFab, did you run FixVTS or vobblanker after DVDFab had ripped ?, as DVDFab doesn't produce clean enough rips..

anydvd 6490 (Ripper) here. Got through the complete season 4. With LITTLE trouble. Just ran the Disc3 6.76gb through shrink no compression to iso (transfer to other drive) 1:53 sec. Mounted on virtual drive, Powerdvd had no trouble, no errors. I dont expect that rebuilder will have any trouble with the files, I dont expect imgburn will have trouble with the iso. VERY unusual bug you speak of.

Okay, DVDfab seemed to rip it without incident. I then ran FixVTS (I hope I was supposed to choose "full disc" mode) and it finished with no problem. I'm now analyzing the folder with DVD Shrink. Then I'll back it up as an ISO file and burn it with Nero. Let me know if you see anything I've done wrong. Thanks.

Oh, by the way, when I ripped with DVDfab, I chose DVD9 mode so I could selectively compress it in Shrink.

Sounds ok i think (i haven't used FixVTS in years) but i believe it's as simple to use as vobblanker (which i use regularly, ie after all DVDFab rips).
Good stuff, keep us posted.

Okay, new question: When preparing to write an ISO file with Shrink, I looked through the settings. On the "regions" tab, what is the "provider ID" and is it necessary to have something there to write the ISO file?

Well, this newest process worked like a charm, as long as you ignore the fact that the burned disc doesn't play. It does the exact same thing every burn attempt before it has done. It doesn't seem to matter how I rip or process the original disc, the result is a black screen, both on my computer and in my set-top player. Which is weird because DVD shows the video at super high speed when loading the files for processing, and during the analysis phase. What could be blocking my efforts once it loads successfully into Shrink??? I'll wait for responses on here, but I think this is going to end with me returning this box set and letting ABC (or whoever the greedy pigs are) eat the production costs. I will not pay for something I can't fully own. Help me if you can, folks, and thanks again.

I'm sorry your having such trouble. Have you not tried anydvd ripper? It gave me one error, for I believe trying to rip more than one at a time (which I do all the time). But when I restarted anydvd, ripped one at a time, NO PROB. I dont believe that rebuilder is gonna have trouble with the files. Im gonna let it do its thing tonight. I believe they've sat on the HDD long enough :) Sometimes things come up. I have ALOT on the back burner!!!

But I'm not trying to seperate the episodes, I have no interest in editing, recompressing with divx or xvid, or anything esle of that nature. I just want to make backup copies of the discs. I don't even care if the annoying previews are on them. I wouldn't know where to begin trying to rip the episodes seperately.

Okay, this is interesting. I put my latest useless burned disc in my computer's DVD drive and here's what AnyDVD had to say about it:

Summary for drive E: (AnyDVD 6.4.8.5)
PIONEER DVD-RWDVR-109 1.58 05/08/09PIONEER
Drive (Hardware) Region: free

Media is a DVD.
Booktype: dvd-r (version 5), Layers: 1
Total size: 2286048 sectors (4464 MBytes)

Video DVD (or CD) label: LOST_S4_D1
Media is not CSS protected.
Video Standard: NTSC
Media is region free.

RCE protection not found.
Found & removed structural copy protection!
Found & removed bogus title set(s)!
Autorun not found on Video DVD.

---------------

Somehow the structural protection survived, along with bogus title sets. Autorun was also removed (if it was supposed to be there in the first place, I don't know). Is there a setting I missed in DVDfab telling it to remove the structural protection? I only changed it from the default DVD5 setting to DVD9 and left everything else on default. Any ideas? I really don't want to have to cause a scene at Wal Mart tomorrow...

You won't lose anything by using DVD Rebuilder, Rebuilder can compress video down to 44%/48% with amazing results btw.

I take it you're using dual layer discs ?, the cause most likely lies there..

Anydvd will remove all of that with ANYDVD RIPPER. Right click the fox, rip to HDD. Dvd fab does not produce clean rips. I only use fab when I want to remove the full screen version on a disc with both FS/WS. One thing to note however is that anydvd will not do it (CLEANLY THAT IS)on the fly (background) with dvd shrink. It needs undivided attention on the files. WHEN THEIR HEAVILY encrypted. Hope this helps. And I dont mean to knock Dvd fab. Its simply my 2cents! :D

Nope, they're single layer. I don't know anything about the software you're suggesting and I really don't have the time to re-author every disc I want to back up. Can we not just find a way to murder this copy protection so that I can back up each entire disc at once?

And to Omegaman: Ripping with AnyDVD was one of the first methods I tried. The results were the same (after the other steps): A disc that appears to have nothing on it.

I don't know what else to suggest, there's successful methods been posted in this and the other threads already. All i can think is that you're doing something wrong in the ripping process or with DVD Shrink.
To be fair the only thing Rebuilder could do in your case (apart from giving far, far superior quality to DVD Shrink) is (provided the ripping has been done correctly) to potentially show the cause to be within DVD Shrink..
